How do you embed a YouTube?

Just paste the URL, as long as it has 'www' in it. It happens automagically.

another 'They Might Be Giants' song

Man, no one ever has any OG love for The Four Lads.

I very much doubt if I could recognise the difference between petunias and pansies while sober in broad daylight, much less while lying in the dark drunkenly declining an indecent act upon my person. Kudos.

I think I would have liked Nancy Kerrigan more if she had Jack's tattoos.

what put the winner over the line was, " I am very, very sorry about your petunias."

Yes, that really was a corker. There's also something ineffably funny about the word 'petunias'. (It's the Douglas Adams reminder, perhaps.)

i mean what the fuck is pacific's triple star and why does it need guarding ?

I'm sure we've talked about this before, but I've always been tickled by 'guide her in the nations' van' (ignoring that it's short for 'vanguard' and glossing over that errant apostrophe). My husband insists that the nation's van would be a Toyota Hi-Ace because they are *everywhere* (seriously, start counting them and be amazed). I assume a more traditional New Zealand national van would be a Kombi...

In any case, we don't need God to guide us in the van any more. We have GPS nowadays.

Megan, are we related? I fortunately escaped the bird phobia, but my entire family is petrified of them. I fondly recall my uncle Gary at the North Shore dump, hyperventilating and swearing as he pressed himself backwards on to the side of his ute at the sight of a flock of seagulls. (I think he wanted to 'ruuuun, run so far awaaaay...' Boom-tish.)

  • Hard News: Let's lynch the liberals!,

I'd just like to cast my mind back to page 13, before pages 14 and 15 became such a delightful example of thread clusterfuck in action, and say 'aw, thanks Russell!' I have a horrible cold and feel particularly bung, and that made my day. :)

I am not a usenet veteran, but listservs in the 90s were similar, I think? Long, pointless arguments; three women for every 100 dudes; endless bitching about on-topic and off-topic and bandwidth... yeah. Fun times.

I should also note, for Rich and Simon's respective benefits (Mr Grigg, dude, I am stunned, you could *not* have been intimidated by my posts back in the day, as I was and remain a total dork) that when speaking in person I am approximately as daunting and/or elegant as a half-set blancmange.

Jeez, PAS is a Darwinian struggle now? I thought I was just banging on about nothing in particular...

its like a dorian grey thing, online personas hidden in the online attic, the uglier they get, the saner we stay in real life?

That sounds like an awfully complicated thing to maintain, though. I think my online persona is aiming for 'a more coherent version of myself' - someone who is actually able to string a sentence together and doesn't say 'um' and 'dude' every other word, or trail off into 'oh, fuck it' when my thoughts don't quite pan out. But, you know, each to their own and all that. I suppose we all use the tubes in different ways.

  • Hard News: Getting out of the archives,

If I was a believer I'd probably worry a lot less. The 'fact' - as I see it - that it's all up to us fills me with dread!

Word. My husband is all 'you make *your own* meaning! Isn't that exciting?' No, dude. It is not exciting. In fact, it is terrifying. Our utter insignificance in the face of a limitless, uncaring universe is a total fucking bummer.

(I am pretty pleased with the cupcake I just ate, though. So there's that.)

Using 'fuck' isnt actually compulsory, or necessary.

Ah, thank you. I was just getting annoyed by the fact that i was reading this horrible word all day.

Please don't take my profanity away from me. It's all I have. :)

All I wanted to say, to the forum in general, I've said: nosce te ipsum.

This is such a mind-numbingly ludicrous piece of advice to give to hundreds of random people with whom you have never interacted more than cursorily that I must actually give you a weird sort of props for the chutzpah. That's adorable.
