Heather: I hope you've got those fists registered as "deadly weapons" :)

Like I said I was forced to:
we are nation of sad f#cks who pin our hopes/self-esteem on our international sporting prowess.
Post-melodramatic stress-disorder?

Actually Surfing is listed under active leisure activities, so I suppose it isn't a sport.
Then again I don't think cricket is a sport either.

I thought I'd pop over to Sparc and see what the most popular sports in New Zealand are (I remember hearing it was surfing, but I wanted to check). I came across this page which not only shows someone yachting but says:
In this section, you can find out what SPARC's Capability and Sport Development Unit is doing to help ensure New Zealand has the sport and physical recreation systems we need to:
* be the most active nation
* win consistently in events that matter to New Zealand.By the way all the stats are here, though 2000/01 is the latest data.
For young people the highest participation is in Soccer(sic), Rugby, Cricket and Netball (swimming and excercising for "Active Leisure" activities).
For adults the highest participation is in Golf followed distantly by Tennis and Touch (gardening and walking for "Active Leisure" activities). I thought this was skewed towrds the "older" generation until i looked at the 25-34yr demographic.

I did see a group of Vietnamese fishermen outside your place looking very embarrassed.

Remember, you brought this on yourself...THEATRE!

why are we talking about Singapore?
I thought Russell was in Saigon?
Did someone invade someone and I didn't hear about it? -
As a sport, I quite like yacht match racing as a spectacle, to me it has a lot of the tension and slow motion drama of test cricket.
You're exactly right, yachting is as boring as cricket.
There are some, mainly idiots, who see rugby as the be all and end all of this country, but it does need some perspective. Sports is a complex topic that the "everyman" can get into and know to an indepth level. Noam Chomsky talks about how you can go into a bar and ask about politics and get a bunch of blank stares, ask about football and you'll recieve 50 years of exact statistics and commentary.
Hence, when little New Zealand happens to be the best in the world at Rugby, our general population sits up and notices. We may also be a large exporter of agricultural products but no one will quote you the latest export lamb prices (unless they are deeply involved).

I'm with Emma on this. I only saw Firefly on DVD but after watching it, then switching to see what was on prime time I would've sent nuts to anyone who could bring it back.

We had a book of 20th Century images* at home when i was a kid. The image of the vietnamese girl burned itself into my brain. My mum told me about the when she first saw it on TV here in NZ and how it made nearly everyone she knew take a step back from their ideas about war.
*(ironically released before the century ended)I'm not sure how I view the Paris Hilton photo. I agree with NI:
it's just that her disaster is more personal/self-centred. I have no doubt she had to go to jail but I don't doubt for a minute it's going to be devastating to her
For me it does typify our culture. It's not a paparazzi shot really. And it's possibly much nicer than those helicopter shots we've seen recently. But it is pure human emotion, ironically, this is reality TV.
ps. here is a post closer to the source which shows the uncropped photo, read down to the "featured comment"
