  • Hard News: Public health: the new terror…,

I'm wondering if the high percentage of doctors joining the Nazi party might have had something to do with the widespread acceptance of eugenics in western societies during the early twentieth century.

I would imagine it was more of a high-society thing. When certain members of the community join the party it would be join or be ostracised. Peer pressure is a powerful tool.

However, being a doctor doesn't make you ethically above everyone else. Remember those "no you can't have any birth control" doctors in the states? And I was told some similarly awful NZ doctor stories by a friend recently.

  • Southerly: A Slow Journey and a Quick Arrival,

Awesome! I have to say I was getting worried.

Now the main concern is will the young man be a Rob or a Bob? Or maybe even a Robby or Bobby?

ps. I have never heard of "lux", so figured it was one of the South Island words like "crib".

  • Hard News: Taking the rise,

Nic, I assume you're in the States and not Wellington. I'm not really surprised. America isn't involved this time around, why would they broadcast it? My ESPN feedreader has the occasional piece but that's about it.

But even when America is in the cup, the racing is during baseball season and during the NBA draft and something is bound to be happening in the NFL off-season etc etc.

    From the Kung-fu Monkey:

The commutation, rather than being some canny half-measure some are calling it, is actually worse than a pardon. The President's saying "Fine, fine, I agree a jury of his peers found him guilty of multiple counts of perjury and obstruction of justice, but I don't think he should be punished for that." He's not even saying that he believes Scooter's innocent. He just doesn't think people like Scooter should have to suffer just because they're guilty.

Ok, if I had done a little work I could've added more than anecdote: The Worst President in History, Rolling Stone, April 2006.

A Rolling Stone article published a year or so ago (actual date escapes me) by a leading political historian compared George W's performance in his career with similar situations other presidents had faced. The historian then compared how the other presidents fared afterwards compared to GWB.

The result was: GWB is the worst US president in history.

  • Hard News: Not off to bed,

bFM's Jose Barbosa scored an interview with Joss Whedon

Jose was so happy and nervous all at the same time, bless him. It was all he talked about all weekend.

  • Hard News: Here and There,

ESPN’s dumb-and-dumber coverage of European Soccerball is enough to put me off the channel for life

Oooh yeah, lets not get started on Tommy Smyth 'wid a Y'.

Ah, touche. I never bother with that junk myself (call me when the winner isn't one of three predictable teams).

    But c'mon, Sportscentre!?! (sorry Sportscenter)

Y'all need to watch more ESPN, easily the best sports coverage on Earth (though you do still have to correct them every now and again, because everyone's human...mostly)

I listen to 'dem dropkicks and all...

Crap! We're gonna have to up the game! Who knew people actually listened!?!

Murray Deaker is like a chimp with a machine gun*. Eventually he'll hit the target.

A global season would be good, but how does it work? I suppose it doesn't have to be winter to play rugby (unless you're playing at the MCG). When is the off-season?

    *but less fun
