  • Hard News: Go Us,

__Alaska House Speaker John Harris (R): “She’s old enough. She’s a U.S. citizen.”__

    Ha, glowing.

Yes. Alaska Republicans don't seem to be feeling it quite the same way as the faithful in the lower 49 are.

  • Hard News: Go Us,

This Alaskan blog has been covering Palin stories for a little while.

  • Hard News: Go Us,

__There's really only one criteria for the electorate when choosing a VP in the US - "can they fill the spot if the President croaks" - she's definitely in Dan Quayle territory there.__

Yeah, Barack Obama levels of experience.

Er, hardly. Obama has a degree in international relations, and he graduated magna cum laude at Harvard's law school. He has introduced sophisticated bills in the US Senate and, of course, has run a hell of a campaign. And unlike Palin, he didn't just get his passport last year.

Palin, on the other hand, said in an interview a few weeks ago that she didn't actually know what the vice president does.

    Really.

  • Hard News: Go Us,

I await those emails from Walt Monegan. If he has them let's see them, otherwise these little conspiracy theories just make a good story...ho hum.

It's rather more than that. There's quite a bit on the record there.

But -- how weird is this? -- the McCain camp doesn't appear to have investigated it, certainly not to the extent of contacting Monegan or searching local newspaper archives or, well, anything meaningful.

C'mon, Andrew: this quite a big job she's up for. What would have been your reaction if the Democrats had picked some as marginally qualified as this, someone who their candidate had met precisely once, and who is facing an ongoing ethics investigation?

Personally, I find the way most of the major Republican commentators have greeted this -- hey, who cares, she's anti-abortion and she can hold a gun! -- yet another depressing example of the way those people have infantilised a political culture on which the rest of the world relies. It's really bullshit.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

I suppose it's possible their internal polling was picking up a bunch of no-vote ultra conservatives?

That's actually the most rational explanation: they needed to give the evangelicals a reason to vote.

__Bloody Gustav's a cat 5 now. Shit. Not what we need. Hitting the road at dawn.__

Best of luck James, hope any damage is minor.

Yes, I hope the road out is smooth and your house is strong. We'll look forward to your return.

    Oh. My. God.

    It gets truly wow.

Palin then ignored notice about the sexual harrassment problems of her replacement choice for Public Safety chief, appointed the guy the next day, then had to accept his resignation two weeks later.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

TPM has a good backgrounder on Palin's "Troopergate" problems.

She seems to have unabashedly used her power as Governor to pursue a family feud, and lied about it.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

We may need a judges decision on this one, sounds like an Americanism to me.

(I believe hospital pass is the appropriate term in New Zealandese)

A hospital pass is a pass made to a player in a hopeless position, with a tackler all but upon him.

A hail mary pass is a risky play made in desperation -- the quarterback throws the ball in the hope of glory.

In any case, Anjum Rahman, sometime PAS participant, kiwistargazer and The Hand Mirror blogger, is standing on the Labour list.

Damn shame her name's not spelled right. But best of luck Anjum. The Hand Mirror candidate!
