  • Hard News: Awesome,

His covering off the attack bases and the lets give up the charade that "people cannot disagree without challenging each other's character and patriotism" was really well played.

I actually clapped when he said that. It's so strong because it appeals to anyone's better nature.

It's also worth noting that the Republicans are still trying to fill a venue six or seven times smaller for McCain's acceptance speech next week.

You'd have to expect that Obama's going to have a superb ground game in November.

Gallup had the convention bounce at six points (48-42) before the speech.

The CNN commentators stopped absolutely wetting their pants over the speech long enough for Blitzer to read out the Republican first response, which was entirely a personal attack on Obama. It didn't sound good.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

    Impressed.

The CNN pundits are falling over themselves to praise it -- and to make note that Obama took on every point the Republicans will use against him.

Like you, I could do without the economic nationalism, but the speech lived up to the OTT event production.

__No, I don't buy that at all. There is legitimate public interest in these matters, and it's Peters who has raised the stakes by calling everyone around him corrupt and a liar.__

Russell, I thought you'd be the last one sucked in by this beatup.

It's not a beatup. Look upthread at that NZF press release this morning: he's accusing the Serious Fraud Office of targeting him to shut him down as a critic. That's so not trivial. A MInister of the Crown who accuses a statutory body of corruption because it investigates him had better have bloody extraordinary proof.

Winston is paying the price for standing up against powers that have been held at bay by Labour. These same powers are attempting to bring down Labour by attacking Peters to deliver their bastard child, National.

No, I don't buy that at all. There is legitimate public interest in these matters, and it's Peters who has raised the stakes by calling everyone around him corrupt and a liar.

I know there are those out there who feel the Gallery has a duty to tell the public all it knows. But on the flipside we also have ethical responsibilities not to be a conduit for unsubstantiated gossip.

Quite. I think it's been outside the Gallery that some poor judgements have been made this week. The airtime given to Hide's baseless claim that TVNZ had destroyed the (heh) Crapper tapes, without benefit of evidence, was alarming.

Trotter is a bit of a dick, but am I the only one who has thought, as the issue bubbled to the surface every couple of weeks over recent months, "wow, the media has decided it's time to finish Winston Peters."

Nah, I don't think so. As the detail emerges, I'm more thinking "why hasn't this been reported before?"

As I said, I'm very cautious about the wilder allegations being chucked around by the likes of Hide, but at the least, the slush-funds are of legitimate public interest given Peters' past tub-thumping.

And finding out about the mysterious Tommy Gear was, well, odd. There's this guy whose wages we're paying and even NZ First doesn't seem to know what he does ...

    **SFO Investigation “Ridiculous” – Peters**

    Friday, 29 August 2008, 9:52 am
Press Release: New Zealand First Party
    28 August 2008

    SFO Investigation “Ridiculous” – Peters

New Zealand First Leader Rt Hon Winston Peters has described the Serious Fraud Office announcement of an investigation as “ridiculous in the extreme”.

Mr Peters said that nobody from the Serious Fraud Office had spoken to him about any of the matters they allegedly had been making inquiries about.

“If they had the courtesy to talk to me, this matter would have been cleared up in a few minutes. They did not even have the courtesy to tell me about their decision – I heard it on the radio.

“This investigation can be laid at my past criticism of the SFO for failing to follow up on major taxation cases involving hundreds millions of dollars over ten years ago and more recent events at the law and order select committee.

“We will meet this investigation head on,” said Mr Peters.

Good grief. I presume he understands what he's alleging and is doing it anyway.

Russell: "that bizarre "gang-rape" claim"??? Wow. What's that?

It's here in Trotter's blog. It's simply bizarre:

It has been made uglier, however, by the way in which this particular dog-fight is being stage-managed. Taking advantage of your opponent’s gaffes, and seizing your chance to drive a wedge into fragile intra-party alliances, is one thing. A carefully orchestrated campaign of character assassination - the political equivalent of a gang-rape - in which members of the news media have become as deeply implicated in the planning, timing and execution of each assault as the polticians themselves, is something else altogether.

    My emphasis.
