__I can think of few things more indicative of a contempt for life [than] that.__

    Bullshit.

Er, how? Having a real human baby born into a porn film seems vile and contemptuous to me. It's not like the baby has a choice. Two key words are missing there: "consenting" and "adult".

If and when you have seen your own children born, you might get that.

I could probably only just swim 151m, just thinking about doing it underwater...

I was slightly obsessive about underwater swimming as a kid -- I could get to the end of the local 25m pool (with a dive) and part way back. And that was a long way. 151m is just ... wow.

The Listener website is safely back under lock and key again, so no further danger of entering the conversation or anything.

    Also, Fran's flaming The Standard.

  • Hard News: Rain on his parade,

I "hear" what you're saying about it being of dubious news value, but I suspect that it's being justified by the facts that a) it's vaguely controversial b) involves local body politics in NZ's biggest city and therefore the biggest chunk of the audience and c) vague talk of "civil rights".

And also, there's the boobies. I wonder whether 3 News' website will offer the "click here for even more Boobs on Bikes video" button again this year ...

Is there any other public opportunity for celebrating sex, sexuality and eroticism? Or is the Steve Crowe event all there is?

I saw the Hero Parade that way, even though it wasn't my sexuality. It had a a joy to it, while Crow's thing seems like some dumb fast-food version. But again, I guess that's an aesthetic judgement.

    @Felix:

Until there is a blogger who wishes to cover Parliament in a full-time capacity I suspect that will be the best avenue to take. (on that note is there currently a full-time blogger who could cover Parliament full time?)

No. The nearest thing would have been Keith Ng when he was at Salient: he was effectively there on the magazine's behalf, but I think got a wider profile from what he wrote here.

I think the issue is that some of the "game" element capture the attention with a lot more ease so people focus on that and some of the more ... umm ... less sparkly stuff (probably a poor choice of words) slips under the radar.

I still think the covering of the game happens a little too often., and that the journalists sometimes bring themselves onto the field too. Example: Winston Peters' unusual arrangements are a real story, but the day the Herald website led with the news that Peters had -- gasp! -- turned his back on journalists was a silly one. The fact that Peters has been rude to some reporters is not the lead.

And there are certainly times that gallery journalists do really nail the detail. As much as I thought the Herald got hysterical over the EFA, the way Audrey Young was clearly intellectually on top of the legislation and its flaws was hugely impressive.

OTOH, the way the therapeutic medicines bill was reported -- never mind the detail, it's another black eye for Labour! -- really did my head in.

Anyway that's my two cents worth for the moment. I just felt like doing my bit to defend, if not my honour, some of my fellow professionals.

Fer sure. And it's appreciated. I'm not one of those people who thinks that bloggers will magically replace professional journalists, or news organisations. We're providing commentary, linking things together and generally cohering to a form that's not actually the same as either news reporting or hard-copy commentary. It's not zero-sum at all.

Regardless of ones likes or dislikes of Crow's parade I think the need to describe women's breasts as awesome says a lot about the writer.

    Er, like what?

The thing I find most offensive about the whole mess is the way that everyone is talking about breasts, and only breasts, as if there's going to be a collection of floating disembodied boobies floating through central Auckland. Fortunately (or not?) there aren't. There are going to be topless women riding through central Auckland. I.e., people.

That occurred to me too. It's not boobs on bikes, it's women.

The 'libertine left' always relied rather heavily on women being sexually subservient, of course. (The chicks had to make all the cups of tea as well as supply the blow jobs.)

I saw a documentary about the Merry Pranksters and their bus journey once, with lots of archive film. It was a sobering reminder that the freedom fighters were pretty much sexist jerks whose chief expectation of the women around them was to be sexually available.
