  • Up Front: Not Such a Hard Word After All,

Just for the record, I think this trial will heap humiliation and embarrassment on all the protagonists, and that that, rather than any "blackmail" (Martin Hirst demonstrates that even lefties can lose the plot on that one) or (you just knew a Kiwiblog commenter would go there) a Labour Party plot is a reason this matter has not come before the courts until now.

I feel like emailing my guesses to a third party. But that would be trite.

I don't know if that's true or not, because the complainant's name is permanently suppressed. God, DPF is a friend of mine but I'll stick to my view that it's a matter of when not if one of his resident psycho-trolls lands him in court.

Oh good one, dude! And then you post the statement in question on my blog!?

No worries. Did feel the need to delete it, though.

Veitch should start praying some of these folks end up on the jury. There are times when I'm just embarrassed to be a human being.

I had to go look. And then I had to post a comment ...

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

From the thread on Grant's Bebo page linked to by Tony:

A friendly message to anyone considering posting to this thread. Users of the Public Address System ( http://publicaddress.net/system ) have been linking here in an attempt to ridicule and belittle my comments on other matters. Anything you post here (or anywhere on my bebo site) may well be read by more than what you might expect.

Good grief. And what exactly do you and your chums talk about when you think no one's listening?

And please, stop rolling around playing victim. I'm often struck by how often right-wing-troll types do that (Redbaiter being the lamest example). I'm not minded to delete any posts let alone ban you, Grant (although you certainly used up a life with one callous and revolting comment on the abortion thread), but your rhetorical style does rather beg for people to come down on you with actual facts and logic.

  • Field Theory: Long Weekend,

apparently we as the most glorious sporting nation on earth have a link to phelps.

    he visited here once.

Hey, twice. Clearly, he owes it all to us:

Phelps, who yesterday won his eighth gold medal at the Olympic pool, visited Dunedin last year to test the LZR Racer, the full body Speedo swimsuit, he used to win many of his medals in Beijing, at Otago University's water flume.
The flume, one of only six in the world, allows scientists to see how the movement of water past a swimmer is affected by the suit he or she is wearing.

Phelps also visited Dunedin in 2003 to train with Duncan Laing, the coach who guided New Zealand's greatest swimmer Danyon Loader, to two Olympic gold and one Olympic silver medal.

"We were there doing some suit testing at one of the flumes," Phelps said when asked at a press conference, about last year' s visit which was shrouded in secrecy.

    Update:

The offences are alleged to have taken place in Mangawhai, Rotorua and Auckland.

At Auckland District Court this afternoon, Veitch's lawyer, Stuart Grieve QC, said all of the charges would be "strenuously defended".

  • Field Theory: Long Weekend,

Five golds in five consecutive olympiads.

    Now, that's a great athlete.

Aw yeah, but he had help ;-)

Lasse Viren's 5k-10k double at two successive Olympics is another prodigious achievement.

  • Up Front: Not Such a Hard Word After All,

Hmmm. The nature of the charges seems to militate against the "I just lashed out the one time" message:

Broadcaster Tony Veitch has been arrested on six charges of assault between 2002 and 2006 and one count of injuring with reckless disregard.

Police today issued a statement saying a 34-year-old company director had been arrested and charged with six counts of male assaults female and one count of injuring with reckless disregard.

If multiple assault counts are eventually proved, I'll look forward to a response from Veitch's media cheerleaders.

  • Field Theory: Long Weekend,

The chaps among you might be interested to know they are *gorgeous*, along with being really nice and good at rowing and that.

They seem to glow with healthy young womanhood. I remember a British backpacker once holding forth to me on New Zealand girls on the trail, to the effect of:

"You drag yourself up some historic mountain in the blazing sunshine and you get up the top and you're absolutely shattered -- and there are two New Zealand girls there relaxing and having a beer!"

    Like that.

Looking at the Herald's front page with them, Valerie and Hayden Roulston, I was struck with the way they all looked like good sorts. Valerie is a dude (in a strictly non-gendered sense of the word) and Roulston looks like a naughty boy.

  • Field Theory: Long Weekend,

So how did we all cope with the early-morning schedule clashes?

I watched the All Blacks and had Valerie streaming live on the laptop. The frame-rate dropped markedly when the shot-put started, but it was viable, which is quite cool.

Although I've found the most reliable way to view TVNZ's streams is to not do it in a web browser. I tend to grab the .asx URL for the stream out of the page source, then open that in QuickTime (with the Flip4Mac components installed). I assume Windows Media Player would do it just as well.

Then later on I flicked over for the 100m in HD and then had to rewind the PVR to see Carter's try after switching back to Sky.
