  • Field Theory: Olympic Eye Candy,

Gymnasts are indeed tiny and very young. Pound for pound, pubescent girls are the strongest of our species, in terms of strength to weight ratio.

I think that qualifies as a Killer Fact!

The Chinese gymnasts seem atypical, though: most of the women are pocket rockets: five-footers with huge shoulders and narrow waists. That looks even more unusual.

My condolences to you and your friends family Russell. Your friend sounds like he had a fascinating life.

I fear I've made him sound like some globetrotting backpacker. He was a psych nurse, often on crisis intervention, which is a whole other sort of adventure.

You can hear the sampled sounds of some of his patients in Headless Chickens recordings -- most notably, the call at the beginning of 'Expecting to Fly', which was a guy called Willie the Whoop. They were always recorded, as Michael Lawry noted at the funeral service, with respect for who these people were.

There are other people who've lost much more than me in Michael's passing, but I was really moved by the service. And nary a hint of religiosity.

    Lil Wayne, apparently.

  • Field Theory: Olympic Eye Candy,

The laydeez over at Jezebel have been drooling over the shirtless New Zealand football team doing a haka.

    And gettin' kinda dirty too:

two of my favorite things: Pacific Island dance and nekkid men. #17, I have a place you can put that tongue.

    Ohh, errr, missus ...

  • Field Theory: Olympic Eye Candy,

As you've pointed out, the laydeez get all the eye candy. Whats in it for us men (and similarly inclined wimmin?). Gigantic muscular female freakazoids. Not my cuppa tea.

    (a) Be patient. The pole vault is coming.

    (b) In the meantime, click the GayNZ link. On the internet, no one knows you're not a a lesbian.

OK, I think it's quite legitimate to surmise that it wouldn't have scored the same coverage (the front page lead in today's Herald, ditto for Morning Report) without the Prime Ministerial angle.

Of course. At the pub last night, there was a TV over the bar showing Olympics coverage. And then there was a "Breaking News" banner.

First thought: Something's gone awfully wrong in Beijing. But then Guyon Espiner appeared. Political scandal? Then there's a map of the South Island with a point indicated in the Southern Alps.

At which point I correctly guessed that something had gone terribly wrong on a Prime Ministerial tramping expedition.

Not really related to this post, but for Friday fun you can hear Britney Spears say 'Russell Brown'.

Ah yes, I'd heard about this.

Also, once, a friend excitedly emailed me from the UK to say that Bob Geldof had stood at a microphone at the NME Awards, scowled and said "Russell Brown: what a cunt".

Although I had in fact had the odd harsh word for Bob around that time, this seemed highly unlikely. And, indeed, I downloaded the programme and Bob was referring to Mr Brand, who had been mocking him earlier in the show.

But if you want to talk about seriously tacky, go here and marvel. Yes, it would have been nice if the death of Gottlieb Braun-Elwert could have been reported without the (unsurprising and not entirely inappropriate) PM angle being laid on quite so thick, but really...

Poor DPF, having to deal with that kind of idiocy. But I do think sometimes he needs to stop pissing about with "demerit points" and just ban people permanently on grounds of lacking common decency.

And I had to go over and see what Whaleoil and his commenters were saying ... he really is a piece of shit, isn't he?

  • PA Radio: Silver Scrolls and golden tunes,

APRA general manager Ant Healey talks to Damian Christie about this year's Silver Scroll awards and the fact that two of this year's finalists also happen to be big in advertising.

*sits back and awaits the shit-fight*

I do find the idea of an online shit-fight about Dickens quite amusing. And also quite nice.
