"Lashings of corporate welfare" seem to accompany the slightest mention of sporting events, for some reason. I don't buy it myself. Mind you, the crumbling footpaths are not likely to help coax the tourists into a retail frenzy either.

But I do agree about not wanting Ministers to embarras themselves by tryin to be down wif th yoof. :)

there are any number of large cultural and sporting events every year that stagger on without their own minister
I'm not a huge sports fan but I really don't think you're grasping what "large" means in this case, Craig.
Third biggest event of any type in the entire world and the largest ever held here.60 or 70,000 extra visitors and tv audience of 3 or 4 billion.
$280m in ticket sales. (Grain of salt time) half a billion dollars total spend, with half of that just in the Auckland region (spot the frayed logo in its native habitat).
Any country would apply some government effort, especially when the bid only succeeded because of the visible govt backing, and when they co-own the hosting company.
Of course I'm not denying that the interest of those like McCully has a fair whiff of junket about it..

I was amazed how damn perfect the very first episode of Outrageous Fortune was, seeing it again recently.

Roads and piped water will be supplied on a fully commercial basis
Privatise the roads? - can't see that one going down well with moderate National voters. I suppose we need to see how these extreme positions (including climate change) get diluted during negotiation.

Promote contracting out of many council services.
Well that answers the question of where the rest of the displaced consultants would go..
-
creating a whole parallel bureaucracy outside the public service
By contrast, I have heard somewhere in the last week (can't remember where) that one way to save money now without axing existing public servants would be to force them to take on much of the work currently contracted out to consultants. Might free up a few bacon-eaters for these review roles..

Go the old home town!
The most livable city of its size, y'mean Susan?

I am totally prepared to accept the possibility of anthropomorhic climate change if it can be proved
Andrew, what would constitute proof for you?
