Hey, Tony. Thoughts on Archives ?

Well I had most of it anyway-even some of the unreleased stuff but the sound quality is excellent. Including 2 live discs already released was a bit off though. Only went with cd set as Blu Ray would have worked out at $500-$600 before I bought a player. DVD not much cheaper. The Blu Ray features would be great to see though. I think the next volume will be more interesting as it will cover a period where he made and scrapped entire albums as well as performing some fairly pivotal concerts.

As I recall, this ridiculousness is exacerbated by his squat little rock kicks. I suppose we can blame all the blow they were doing backstage.

Which brings in the story of Neil Young's nose candy being air brushed out of the movie.

    How about Jerry Jeff?

Now 've seen everything A Jerry Jeff reference on PA. He was alt country before alt country if you know what I mean.

Could there be some kind of deadly Dorian Grey thing going on here?

Hope not. He got up with Neil Young in Hyde park yesterday to sing A Day In The Life. Not time for Neil to go yet. (Do I sound obsessive?)

Ah the albums of my youth...Thick as a Brick, Aqualung, Fragile, Close to the Edge, Meddle. Even went to Wishbone Ash in Wgtn around 75. Then I found Neil Young and that was that. Although the new Decembrists album could almost qualify as prog and I quite like it so maybe things haven't changed as much as I think.

Also, I have listened to Rick Wakeman's concept album about the Six Wives of Henry VIII. Beat *that*.

    I owned this one too

  • Random Play: For what it's worth,

As a very part time reviewer for NZ Musician I am in complete awe Mr Reid of your music reviews, obviously huge record collection and infinite knowledge and find Elsewhere to be an essential internet read.
As a huge and knowledgeable aficionado of Mr Young I have to agree with most of what you have said about the Archives. Even though I already have a lot of what's there (and some that's not there but should be, just don't tell Warner Bros I've got it) I still bought the cd set for what I didn't have and the excellent sound quality. It is possible to buy the individual discs from his website and from what I've read the Blu Ray set is nearly all sold out around the world already. You're right though, Vol 2 will be the kicker. Due in 3 years according to Neil's people.

  • Hard News: F**kin' Choice,

Re Outrageous Fortune-I made fish pie for tea tonight. Wonder how it compares to Cheryl's...or Pascal's for that matter.

  • Hard News: Not many, if any ...,

Specials Smecials-It all pales in comparison to Neil's Archives . Due out next week. Although where I'm going to get the money for an 8 disc Blu ray set and a Blu Ray player is the big question.

  • OnPoint: Budget 2009: “Aww, shit.”…,

Some interesting 'savings' in the Education Budget, such as in several areas of early childhood education including not reducing teacher/child ratios as previously planned, also cuts to 'gifted and talented', support for students at risk and deaf education. Large cuts to the Ministry of Ed's budget for supporting teachers, especially in any area that is not related to narrow literacy and numeracy standards.

Interestingly on the MOE website the first "initiative" is extra funding for independent schools. The rational being it will make it their fees lower and enable more enrolments!!! Also in 2011/2012 they want to make savings in the staffing budget-right when the next bulge in pupil numbers hits schools. Pigs are starting fly around my school now.
