  • Hard News: Lucinda Williams made me cry,

This was not, it must be said, a young crowd. I'm 46, and there were plenty of people older than me (including, it should be noted, the singer herself, who is looking fine at 55). And we (mostly) all sat there, our bums anchored, twitching urgently in position.

Wellington was much the same. Maybe it was the Nat Radio crowd who were going cos Kim Hill went! I'm not sure some of them were expecting the twin guitar attack and the big sound. Some calls to turn the band down. Not from me though.

But there were puzzling moments: Buick 6 coming on unannounced and playing forever (although I did like their version of Marque Moon); the little huddles Lucinda got into with her minder; the music stand she kept consulting.

I was expecting the Buick 6 set and totally enjoyed it. The only dissapointment was that they didn't do Cinnamon Girl like they have been on their states tour. In Wellington she had sound issues which made her a little distracted. Got to say though from row 3 Lucinda looks every bit of her 56 years now and her years of hard living are catching up with her, capos on the wrong fret, reading the lyrics from a book, but then she starts singing and that voice just slays you. Worth the drive down from Napier.

  • Hard News: Of Monsters and Old Boys,

If Roughan's report wasn't so scary it would be laughable. It seems to me that what it is is the beginning of a concerted effort by the media and others to soften up the public to a wholesale attack on the teaching profession cause they've "had it good for too long". Maybe I'm being a little paranoid here but an example of this is already happening with the ministry not initiating negotiations with the NZEI for the a new Support Staff agreement even though there old one has expired. The reason-the minister has not yet given the ministry the mandate to begin negotiations. Roughn's comments are just teacher and union bashing. The NZEI/PPTA does not run the education system of this country. They are there to support teachers and ensure they get a fair deal just like any other workers or employers organisations. As others have already said there are many reasons for school's and teachers gaining success with their kids, zoning is not one of them. I wouldn't personally change teaching my diverse range of 5 year olds in a decile 4 school for a homogenous bunch in a decile 10 school but that's just me. And having a couple of mildly autistic kids just makes it that more interesting and entertaining at times.
And just OT-Lucinda Williams was great in Wellington on Wednesday night. If you're going tonight in Auckland make sure you see the opening set by her backing band Buick 6.

  • Hard News: Some Monday Things,

I'm just thinking that about now some who voted National might have those immortal words of Johnny Rotten "Ever get the feeling you've just been had." running through their head. Especially if you earn less than $48000 a year.

  • Hard News: After the Charter,

Funny that. I just finished watching the Amazing Journey DVD I bought a while back and hadn't got round to watching. Did Paladino fill Entwhistles shoes? I'd imagine it wasn't quite the same. He was a monster of a bass player.

Quite a good week then for the producers of

  • Hard News: Top of the Populism,

And in the second part of the show, Keith Ng the numbers king and Radio NZ education reporter Gael Woods discuss the alarming statistics on school violence that churned around the news media last week. Perceptive readers may have guessed that they are not all they seem.

What pissed me off about the attack on the teacher last week were Key's and Tolley's responses on TV. Both were trying to sweep it under the table and neither mentioned or showed any sympathy for the teacher. Tolley was flippant I thought "Oh there's all these teachers and all these students, it's bound to happen sometime" or words to that effect. I can see a rough 3 years for us in the teaching profession.
