  • Field Theory: Who says chivalry is dead?,

Oh I agree Voigt sounds like a fuckin hardman. Still, if he lost any blood he can just inject some more at the end of the stage.

  • Field Theory: My first All Black game,

Something I forgot to mention anywhere but the title: this was the first time I had seen the All Blacks live.

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

The following reply is from earlier on but the internet ate it at the time:

I also remain puzzled by the idea that you would pay for content on your iPad that you'd get for free on your regular computer, but clearly there's so much of the Apple experience I just don't get.

I have to say reading from the iPad in bed on the weekend has got me interested in the newspaper format again. And while I use the free NYT app, I'd happily pay a couple of bucks each time for more. The most annoying thing is not being able to do the Stuff quiz (due to teh Flash), so not bad at all.

I hadn't seen the Times (London) paywall before. I can't believe everything is behind it. After a long and, at times, heated argument one night we came to a conclusion that we would never pay for news (facts basically), but that for skilled research, background and analysis we would pay.

  • Field Theory: My first All Black game,

Showing McCaw, who didn't top any of the metrics last week, stepping up when he was needed this week, as a real captain does.

And remembering that Tracey's stats are a little "Richie Centric" :) But in the booth the most notable players were Muliaina, McCaw, Mealamu and Franks.

  • Hard News: The Munter and the Munted,

when Munter patiently explains WHY the guy called him a pig wins as best comic moment on television this year.

Not at all, the toaster scene was much funnier.

However, I felt gamed. Nobody died, what the fuck, are you being clever or something? This had better not be a Lost-style final season. And seeing John Campbell made me groan, especially when they tried to make him "funny and shit".

This should've been a grab-you-by-the-nuts episode and I felt it was much more of a pat-on-the-head one. I thought they were going somewhere with the whole "the Wests are now persona non grata" but even that fell flat instead of being a sense of community isolation (them against the world).

    Overall: B-

  • Field Theory: Time to relax,

I went home sick yesterday and ended up watching the Home Run Derby. Sigh Then again it was nice to see David "Big Papi" Ortiz firing balls all over the park with a big grin on his face and laughing with his friends and kids.

Also the TV3 sports news last night somehow failed to mention the only sport that was actually on.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Faces of the Defeated,

Here's my favourite comic strip, Get Fuzzy, with some suggested improvements to the rules.

I love the refs as MMA fighters suggestion. I sadly came away from the final feeling incredibly cynical (it's bound to be gone in four years time). Germany-Spain or Germany-Uruguay I felt, were the best games to end the tournament on and just ignore the snore fest we actually got.

  • Speaker: KICK IT! The Wee Fella,

@Keir not quite the same though is it. Suarez is more of a blood-doper in cycling. He cheated to gain advantage. Sure he got caught and was penalised, but that doesn't make him any less of a fuckwit.

Gio seems to be arguing that we should shrug our shoulders and say he's not a cheat, which I don't get. Just because "it happens" doesn't mean I'm not going to call him an arsehole. He's a sad little man whose main talent seems to be falling over dramatically, his actions saved his country from losing to Ghana and he is probably quite happy about that.

But he did cheat and I don't see why I'm not allowed to incredibly annoyed by that. The mere fact that we all know what the "Hand of God" means in this context shows that I am not alone in holding on to a grudge because someone cheated to (in this case) deny a goal at the World Cup.
