With the proviso that we'll never know whether it would in fact have happened, yes.

That's a different question, though, if it turns out the scheme is in the black by any significant amount it ought to be part of the conversation. So long as I understood how the levy even worked, which remains to be confirmed.

I was once upgraded to business class. That was bliss.

Wasn't the deposit scheme financed partly by a levy on financial institutions and banks? Do we know if the scheme has been triggered before, and how much money has gone into the coffers as a result of the levy?

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

Did I mention that I got a lovely flashblocker for Firefox that replaces all flash content with an F symbol you can press to play said content? I did it mainly to get around the blasted autoplay on YouTube, but it made me realise how much flash content there is on the Web. The bloody thing is everywhere - even bit.ly has it. If the iPad can help hasten its death I'll be a happy man, but in the meantime doesn't it make using an iPad frustrating?

:-) giovanni, that's not what I said, was it?

Not quite, but there ought to be a middle ground between being an Apple bunny and agreeing with the proposition that the iPhone or the iPad hurt the Internet. That's a case that needs to be made a little more convincingly, and I think that if some users see the locked down nature of the iPad as something of a feature, that's legitimate too. It takes a long bow to bring Rodney into it.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

So now I'm an Apple supporter - something of a shock I must confess.

  • Hard News: The Southern Apps,

Yeah, except politics ain't a consumer product I suppose. I am struggling with this analogy of yours, verily.

But if you want to talk about negative repercussions, I have one. I was at a special ed meeting a couple of weeks ago and they gave this presentation on assistive technology, lauding amongst other things the features and low price of the Lenovo tablet (whilst the iPad, in the words of the presenter, "isn't ready for us yet", due precisely to its being lockded down). But - bad news - the Lenovo was going to be withdrawn form the market as the company tried to reposition itself following the launch of the iPad. And the closest alternative is much more expensive.

An unintended consequence, no doubt, but a consequence nonetheless.
