The effect of unintended consequences : bringing Roger Douglas back into the public eye and into the news!

Make it stop! I'll be good! Please make it stop!

  • Hard News: The Creepy Party,

it is quite fun to watch them pull their house down around them, but in terms of being part of a government , and having a role in policy etc - it's shit - they really shouldn't be there, and this just shows why. But I am glad that the rock has been lifted, even if I'm not surprised at what is scurrying away from the light.

Craig - perhaps we can get that three-way (or spit-roast?) filmed and then put the video out on pay per view for MPs to watch when they're alone in thier hotel rooms?

  • Speaker: John Roughan is Scared,

Even Cairo has a decent, functioning underground railway system: If London, Paris or NY is too much to hope for why can't Auckland aspire to be like Cairo?

  • Hard News: Behind the Paywall,

I used to flick through the Times online 2 or 3 of times a week - now I can't, but I'm not that worried. I can still read the other English dailies I like.

I don't want to pay, I usually go to these sites for specific articles or writers, not the whole paper. I can't see how Murdoch can keep this going.

  • Hard News: Party central is hurting my head,

I'm with Christopher Dempsey here - why would you want to be down on the wharf in an Auckland winter? It'll bemiserable.

And I'm old enough to remember just how consistently ghastly and tasteless so much of McCully's wardrobe and look has been over the years - the idea that a philistine like him wold be involved in a decision about aesthetics is ludicrous.

  • Hard News: Piss-poor on PEDA,

The Herald is piss-poor at most things, so no surprises there.

Shameful to see how English basically abused te Heu heu, and has now been caught out. The whole thing smacks of the worst sort of cronyism.

Giovanni - I guess for me the content of the mag showed a lack of understanding. Very little engagement with what I'd consider to be important issues for feminism today. I wrote a piece on how body fascism which used to be seen as targetting women has become so strong for gay men - but I'm not sure how many people saw the parallels

The old "Can a man be a feminist" argument - I tend to come down on the "No, but a supporter of " side, maybe because of the way I was introduced to feminism by fierce dykes back in the late 70s ;-)

For example, you could be anti-apartheid, but without living it as SA's blacks were forced to, it's not really the same thing politically.
"The personal is political" is one of the key messages of feminism I think. I don't live with the oppression and structural inequalities that women do, so I can't really understand them - but it's not an argument I'd put much effort into today.

Oh dear - don't you rremember the feminist wars of the late 70s and early 80s? Massive bitter fighting over ideas, deep divides, largely forgotten now but painful at the time.

And I, a man, was rather bizzarrely asked to contribute to the Akld Uni feminist magazine this semester - it displayed a nearly complete lack of any understanding of feminism by under-grads.

Feminism still matters - there are real structural inequalities based around gender. But everyone is so busy drinking the kool-aid of mass culture they don't notice.
