  • Hard News: The People's Poet is dead!,

I was in my mid-teens when The Young Ones first screened in NZ in '85. It became a weekly ritual for my friends and I to go into town on Friday evenings, get someone to buy us under-agers a flagon of beer, then go around to someone's place to watch The Young Ones, which screened at 11 or 11.30pm.

Then on Saturday we'd go around to someone else's place watch a video-recording of it, because, well, just by chance someone's parents actually had such a pricey commodity.

Come school on Monday we'd end up talking our way through it, picking the best pieces out, etc.

It really, really was perfect for people our age.

That Muldoon photo is a classic. Say what you will about his politics and personality, but he had immense presence in front of both the TV and still camera.

I didn't intend to derail it - certainly not deliberately, ok ? This might surprise you, but I'm on actually on your side. Sorry for upsetting anyone, but I just thought the gun aspect was worth commenting on.

Fair call, but I think you're getting the wrong end of the stick. But let's be realistic about this: would he have murdered all those people if guns weren't so easily available ? I doubt it.

  • Up Front: Lighting the Dark,

His attitude to women was certainly a contributing factor, but America's crazy gun access, laws and culture also played a major part. Good summary by Michael Moore on it.

  • Hard News: The Digital Natives,

It'll be interesting to see how many MPs IM get and what effect it'll have. If it costs National being in gov't, they'll have no one else to blame, considering they decided to reject the Law Commission's recommendation to scrap the coat-tails rule.

Regarding Vehicle, us Dunedinites were pretty lucky when it came out in 1990, David Kilogur's actual original artwork was put in the window of Echo Records on George St and very nice it looked, too.

Nice to see Craig MacDonald given a pat on the back for his Able Tasmans' artwork. I crossed paths with him last year through mutual friends and he's a top bloke.

As for the almighty Sun Ra, I highly recommend John Swzed's magisterial biography Space Is The Place, a truly cracking read whether you like Ra's music or not.

  • Hard News: Autism and celebrity,

As soon as I saw the start to Seven Sharp last night I immediately thought "This is as bogus a load of quackery as when One News opened with a story about NZ greenlip mussels being a cure for cancer a few years' ago."

Bloody great write-up ! RIU was a real font of knowledge and info for provincial kids around the country in those pre-internet times.

Slight mistake in the Judith Tizard pic, btw: It says "1996" but National were in gov't then and won that year's election, too. "1999" maybe ?
