Overwhelmed. Wanming (Eternally Bright?) Lu (street), the former Xuanwu District, now the southern half of Xicheng (West City) District, in Qing times the western half of the Outer City – i.e. that half of the city open to Han and other non-Manchu commoners, Beijing.
In a nearby Hutong.
Looking north and slightly east across Zhushikou* Xi Dajie, towards the former boundary between the Outer and Inner Cities.
*珠市口, Pearl Market Entrance, though I believe it may be one of the Beijing place names that got "prettied up", swapping its actual name for something with more pleasant associations. An obvious candidate for what the real market was in this case would be 猪, pig, both 珠 and 猪 being pronounced zhū, but pearls being much prettier and a lot less smelly. But it's nearly time for the kindy run, so I'll have to check on that later.
