  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

I'm a little late to this, and possibly a little too young to get into the nuance. However, reading this, I'm wondering how much of it revolves around the idea of 'experiment'. From looking at one of the latest papers from Charlotte Paul:
"The clinical study was not a randomised clinical trial, not all women with CIS were under Green’s care, and no records exist of which women were chosen for that study" (__Lancet Oncology__ , 2008)
This to me implies that there was either no control group, or the identity of the control group were not recorded. Experiment in a scientific sense usually refers to random assignment to groups (*not necessarily but often including a control). Thus, it's probably better characterised as an observational study. Published research on it thus relies on looking at women from that time period at National Women's, who may or may not have had Green, and categorising them based on whether they received 'adequate' treatment. For those purposes of the recent analysis, that means adequate (n=299), probably adequate (n=294), probably inadequate (n=196) and inadequate (n=274).

  • Hard News: Where your money goes,

I just stood on my corner with my bucket silently

Nice work. I always walk past collectors, and if I don't get accosted, I double back, and donate. Especially as these days it seems that the stickers really say 'Do not harass this person, we've already got their money'.

  • Island Life: The Guilt of Clayton Weatherston,

I dithered about linking to that piece. I think in some ways, those two pieces are some of the most illuminating things that have been published in relation to that trial.

The ODT has been posting some more interesting stuff of late. I find Simon Cunliffe's opinion pieces a good read, and Anna Chin occasionally has some gems.

Reading between the lines in this piece from Greg King, it seems fairly clear from this from whence the provocation defence arose.

  • Hard News: New Zealand Weekend Television,

The 1977 top town final was one of the first things we watched on TVNZ OnDemand.
Oh my god. It's just svensational. Not just the powder blue suit, but the scoreboard with the weathergirl-esque scorekeeper. The attire in general. And the games.

Last year's re-hashed Top Town left me cold. It was all about the C-list celebrities, and not much about the competitors or the competition.

  • Hard News: On the Box,

Wow. That panasonic thing seems a complete rip.

Post the launch of Windows 7, I think there may be a real shift to just using a computer, as Windows 7 makes watching Freeview (incl. HD) straightforward, although there are still some issues over the EPG.

And I'm not really sure that the TiVo seems too appealing either. I have 4 tuners (incl. 2 digital-analogue hybrids) and 2 terabyte drives, and will probably buy another 1.5TB or 2TB drive sooner rather than later. As soon as you start recording HD TV you can blow 250 or 500GB real quick. And its not like I watch a lot of TV. But now I just watch TV I want to watch.

  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

I've seriously considered changing from real name to an alias.

I'm with you on this. Especially as it's likely to still be here in a decade. I think some of the restraint with using full names is good, but I also think I'm much more reluctant to say much personal.

    @Andy

    S169 Provocation
    (1) Culpable homicide that would otherwise be murder may be reduced to manslaughter if the person who caused the death did so under provocation.
    (2) Anything done or said may be provocation if—
    (a) In the circumstances of the case it was sufficient to deprive a person having the power of self-control of an ordinary person, but otherwise having the characteristics of the offender, of the power of self-control; and
    (b) It did in fact deprive the offender of the power of self-control and thereby induced him to commit the act of homicide.

On my lay reading, very not about the reasonable person.

@Kong. Not seriously advocating EN_GB. However, from memory, the solution to installing your own dictionary was complicated, and for most here EN_GB better than EN_US

Think of it how you will, but leveling and others make my skin crawl. Standardisation and simplification is poison to English. It's its own evolving bastard hybrid, and no sooner would current English spelling have been standardised than it would go steal some more words from elsewhere and you'd have to start over.
