  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

@Kong -- US spelling is silly. A very few superficial changes, while not really addressing the core issues. Why change honour to honor, when it could just be onor, for example?

Embitteringly, that te reo plugin is not compatible with 3.5.1 :(

  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

@Raymond -- firefox has a built in spellchecker (makes more sense than doing it on the Public Address Server). I assume other browsers have similar offering. Either make sure you download the EN_GB (English Great Britain version), or you can get an Australian dictionary to add-in.

Stupid SMTP should have filters for that kind of thing.

gmail has a cancel feature that works for a short period of time. But the ability to unsend before the email has been POP'ed on the other end would be handy. OTOH hand, if SMTP had functionality like that, would it still be a Simple Mail Transfer Protocol?

  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

I don't have a big enough sample to infer causality, but the sites that I have felt the most involved in over time have all had bespoke content management systems. Ok, so I'm really only talking about here, and nzmusic.com. But I actually wonder whether having to learn the ropes produces a greater sense of ownership. Certainly at nzm, there tended to be a bit education of new arrivals.
nzm also shows the downsides of having your own cms. The coldfusion based model there slowly ground to a halt as the site & archive's continued to expand. Server downtime, and a not entirely smooth move to a new system I think contributed to its decline.

As for RSS. I seem like the kind of person who should use that. But I actually like visiting websites. It's a bit like picking up a newspaper and flicking through it. Public Address is typically how I start my lunchbreak. I find the distinction between PA and PAS at times quite useful as well. On busy days, I'll just stick to reading the posts, and never quite get to PAS.

  • Island Life: Tune in, turn on, score…,

last time I checked was about $15 for three months' worth, so $60 per year per woman

    You're clearly considering non-PHARMAC prices ;)
If they can get paracetamol tablets for under a cent each, I think they'd be able to get a reasonable bulk deal on whatever vitamins they wanted.

  • Island Life: The Guilt of Clayton Weatherston,

The point I wanted to make by mentioning Colin Bouwer by name and link before was that he only got 13 years non parole. For cold, calculated, premeditated murder. And sure he didn't mutilate his wife's body, but he made her thoroughly ill and go through unnecessary surgery along the way.

Oh wait. Just found the Sentencing Act 2002. He would have been up for at least 17 (lengthy planning), but was convicted in 2001.

  • Island Life: The Guilt of Clayton Weatherston,

Wasn't the a high achieving psychiatrist also from Otago thats been banged up for murder?

Colin Bouwer. This is actually a timely reminder for other reasons. In all the speculation about mental state, intent etc., it's useful to re-consider a man who slowly slyly systematically poisons his wife over the course of months. And who presumably thought he could get away with it.

Uh, also on the lots of Prozac thing, it takes a good month for it to build up to effective levels, and someone was suggesting today that with the kinetics, changing your dose takes perhaps 6 weeks to be realised.

  • Hard News: Chocolate elitism,

A Cadbury PR guy has claimed that "sales are up". Given that the new chocolate is smaller, I wonder whether they're actually selling more chocolate to achieve this increased sale!

Also, I've often wondered whether the GV:Sale Price* relationship is self-fulfilling. Buyers, sellers, real estate agents and valuers are usually not blind to the GV, which likely impacts on your thinking.

*Obviously, I'm not suggesting GV=sale price, but that at a given point in a market, there's a rule of thumb about the relationship between where houses are selling relative to their GVs.

  • Cracker: Home (Is Where I Want to Be),

Based on my recent opportunistic open-home sampling (hah -- wait til you find yourself visiting open homes when you own a house...); certainly here the bottom of the market seems relatively steady, down perhaps a little bit on its peak, but there's some good discounting in the bigger places.*

*Relative to GV. Real estate agents will always tell you that GV is no indication of the value of a house, probably because they want you to value the house on emotion. The reality is that the correlation is strong, but obviously not perfect. Alternately, this could be construed as QV getting their estimations systematically out on the top end at the last valuation in Dunedin.
