  • Hard News: Unusual Democracy,

is it me or does the piano playing kitteh not have the passion colin does for life

I really must get Channel Colin back in action again, or get some Kittah pictures posted.

He's taken to conking out on the couch, full-length, on his back, legs apart. He looks like a teenager who's drunk too much beer and fallen asleep. If he had fly buttons, they'd probably be undone.

  • Hard News: Unusual Democracy,

Check out the Cincinnati Ohio 'Enquirer' story on Nov 10 2004 about the Warren County actions in locking away the ballot boxes for counting

Good link. That's simply astonishing. And another bizarre action that would have provoked a media firestorm in most democracies.

  • Hard News: Unusual Democracy,

One electoral reform I'm like to see is the election date fixed at the first Saturday in November every three years, unless the Government loses a confidence vote or is unable to secure supply. Full stop.

Agreed. Perhaps when there's a five year-term like Britain, where governments almost always go the the polls sooner, it's justified. But any government that can't hang out three years should have only itself to blame.

  • Hard News: Unusual Democracy,

If you can get past the rather breathless tone, this blog post on the Kerry-Edwards' campaign's strategy on the Ohio recount issue is quite interesting. It claims they believed there was fraud, but not enough to turn the result.

And as the death toll proved, there were a lot of firefighters in the building - obviously doing nothing if the fire was allowed to burn uncontrolled.

More like knowing nothing. The breakdown in communication between agencies was a major problem on the day. I gather the NY police and fire departments are still using the same, incompatible radios they had back in 2001. Given the billions that have been laid out since in the name of security I really do find that astonishing.

Mix it up. I alt-clicked on both SJD and Piano cat within 5 seconds and got Nora playing beautifully over Sean. Took me a while to figure out what was going on ..

    That's so cool.

  • Hard News: Unusual Democracy,

It goes against my sense of loony-lefty community spirit, but I have to agree with Anne M. And I reckon there are plenty of creative solutions that the ticket sellers themselves could come up with, without needing legislation to protect their fragile constitutions.

Glastonbury tickets were (to my knowledge) the first to be stamped with name and address; purchases are restricted to two per customer, & photo id is checked at the gate.

Yes, but that rather proves the deleterious effect on ordinary punters of scalping. The majority of Glasto expeditions are probably group efforts (all mine were), but because of scalpers, but now no one can just get tickets for all six happy campers, and everyone has to bring photo ID (what would you use for that in the UK? Would you have to take your passport?).

I'm in two mind about whether it should be made illegal, but for high-demand, quick-sellout events, bulk-buying by scalpers is quite destructive.

  • Speaker: Part 22: Not the Last Post,

I agree we aren't good enough. But I disagree that we should expect to be this bad.

Just think how the Indians feel: huge player base, fervent fans, pots of money flying around, at least one truly gifted player ... and they lose to bloody Bangladesh and go home.

Cricket is a remarkable game in any number of ways, and one of those ways is the extent to which individuals can turn it. If Styris hadn't played that shot and he and Fulton had clattered away for another half an hour, or even if Oram hadn't walked, it might have been different.

    But, of course, it wasn't.
