  • Hard News: Radio being made, in reply to Rob Stowell,

KH is amazing to watch – her face races with ideas and emotions, her body-language fast and twitchy. But it also distracts from the joy of the talk – which is surely the real treasure.

I think she and the viewers found her TV appearances difficult for that reason.

In unsurprising news, Bob McCoskrie is an arsehole.

This need not have been said.

But it did feel good saying it.

I stumbled across this just now. It's striking how much of our present drug law mess is down to that prick Simon Power's out-of-hand dismissal of the Law Commission review:

The report says there is "no reason why cannabis should not be able to be used for medicinal purposes in limited circumstances".

Under a proposed scheme, people suffering from chronic or debilitating illnesses would be able to use cannabis under medical supervision, particularly where conventional treatment options had proven ineffective.

Cannabis cultivators would be licensed to provide medicinal marijuana in the same way as other legitimate dealers in controlled drugs, the report said.

Justice Minister Simon Power today said he would be interested in submissions on the report but he would not allow medicinal use of cannabis.

"There is not a single solitary chance that as long as I'm the Minister of Justice that we'll be relaxing drug laws in New Zealand," Mr Power said.

Mr Power's comments were at odds with the report, which suggested there should be less emphasis on conviction and punishment for low level drug users and more on treatment.

  • Hard News: Bowie, in reply to Rob Hosking,

the actor who played Cat on Red Dwarf once sung backup vocals for Bowie

Woah. Swirly Thing Alert. This is an Awesome Fact.

Danny John-Jules. He's made a video of him and others working with Bowie on the Labyrinth soundtrack, set to the original, unheard, version of 'Chilly Down', when the song was called 'Wild Things' (it had to be changed for copyright reasons).

    What to TV newsreaders do?

It's a different skill. You're projecting, rather than being on mic.

Is there any functional need for the giant headphones (eg. which Katrina Batten wears when reading the news), or is that more just to make it look like radio?

It's actually quite hard to modulate your voice for radio without headphones. She'd want to have a line from the producer anyway.

And why has policespeak become so weird?
Burgles? not as a verb but a plural? who knows?
Shoplifts? I am grammatically insulted and let’s not go into the firearms charge, too weird for words.

Jesus. I'm scared to look now. I might start shouting things to the rest of the family.

Ah! There’s an instance of Alan Yentob’s 1975 film Cracked Actor on YouTube that has somehow survived the copyright cops since 2013. I gather Bowie’s misgivings about the film’s very raw depiction of him may have been a factor in its rarity over the years.

It’s Yentob’s first production for the BBC and might actually be the best music documentary the Beeb has ever made. A must-watch:
