OK, but what about compression vests/pants for sprinters or swimmers?

Perhaps we should make everyone compete naked…?

Didn't FINA tighten up the rules around those, though?

I realise my argument doesn't exactly hold water (yes, yes), especially when you consider my Premier League team is Chelsea.

I should maybe point out, that I might be a little defensive about some of this. Because I really am bored of it being suggested that liking rugby makes you part of rugby culture, and so if a thug hits his wife because the All Blacks lose, I am partly to blame. (Possibly I read too many feminist blogs, though.)

Also, I know some people for whom Rugby is REALLY important. Like my Aunt, former president of a provincial union, whose major worry about recent cancer-related surgery was whether she'd be recovered in time to see the Tri-Nations game.

To me, yachting isn't a sport - and I mean this at America's Cup level - simply because the thing that seems to define it is how much money you spend on your boat. And the skill required to sail said boat is secondary.

On the other hand, I've deliberately avoided all things America's Cup for about 10 years now*, so I could be wrong these days.

    * It's amazing how you can do it if you try! Some people might want to look into it.

dour mud-soaked struggle that ended up “King Country 3, Wairarapa Bush nil”

For the record: My favourite kind of game.

This. So much this. I now sit on my hands and keep my mouth shut around certain company who want to tell me how bad rugby is and how stupid I am for liking it.

Yeah. I...am not good at keeping my mouth shut in those instances, though.

I would start the yachting conversation here, but that would be a massive threadjack. We can have it over a beer one day.

I’ll go you one better, mountain climbing isn’t a sport (hence Ed Hilary is not a sportsman).

Wait, you don't think yachting is a sport either? Maybe we haven't fought about this.

Hey, both Danielle and I have acknowledged that there are problems inherent in the culture of rugby, particularly gendered ones. No one is arguing that.

But there are any number of people who enjoy watching rugby, who like going to games, who think Daniel Carter has delicious cheekbones, who don't participate in those aspects of the game.

We're not asking you to forget those things. We're not asking you to participate, or even have fun - and those people in you office can piss off, and you should tell them so.

What I, at least, am asking, is to be allowed to have my fun, without being told on a pretty regular basis, that the RWC is A Problem and Here's Why.

Huh. Well, I guess what this conversation has managed to do is turn me from someone who didn't much care into someone who really, really does.

Possibly the most controversial comment posted in this thread: Yachting is totally a sport.

I have fought with you over this before. Let's not start again. (or, let's because then I won't be forced to apologise for rugby yet again.)

So, we had the red socks, what now? Fitzy pink nail polish?

I once went to an All Black game in a pink coat. To say I stuck out in the crowd is something of an understatement. So, yeah, i'm on board with pink nail polish.

I’m just noting that I find Hadyn’s threads a little difficult at the moment. Personally. And I say this as a *mild* fan.

As someone who still isn’t sure she cares, I am finding _the world_ kind of difficult right now.

As I noted over at my place a couple of weeks ago, I can’t help but think if this tournament were for anything other than rugby, public sentiment would be very different. You know, like how I hate yachting as a “sport” (I don’t believe it is), but I still bought red socks.

What is frustrating me is that a stupid ad for Telecom (and Adidas being a company that likes to make a profit – shocking!) is suddenly turned in to the RWC being evil incarnate. It’s a sports tournament, FFS. No one is asking you to watch it, to go to games. I get that there is some inconvenience to people, but, hey, I’m inconvenienced every day by people who drive cars. I suck it up.

Yes, we spent a bunch of money on this tournament. 90,000 people are coming here for it. It’d be nice if the place looked nice for our guests. Sure, stadiums cost money – but also, we’ll be using them for years. And unless you want the country to stop playing all sports, and/or having concerts and events, we still need them.

Were we hosting, say, the cricket world cup (which we are, partly, in 2013) would there be this level of animosity?
