  • Up Front: Giving Me Grief, in reply to Megan Wegan,

No. I'm a recent poster to this blog, and before that I was a lurker, but four years ago? Far too much of a computer scaredy-cat to hit "comments". (I used to read "Hard News" all the time, though.)

  • Hard News: Only what we would expect a…, in reply to John Campbell,

One small point of limited interest to anyone but me: the Herald keeps insisting I made it known that I was not the 46 year old celebrity concerned. I did not. At any stage.

    Outrageous!

As well, Martin Devlin might be well-known to people who listen to the station he works for, or who happened to see him on TV, but really, isn't the word "celebrity" over-worked in this country, just a wee bit? Reminds me of when the weather girl was named "personality of the year". I despaired at that point, but we were obviously in for a lot worse.

I’ve always threatened to send my Dad out to The Gambler

I've looked, in vain, for this song mentioned previously in the thread, but it's not there. I know Kenny Rodgers sang it at his recent concert, but I've also seen it mentioned, somewhere , as the song somebody wanted played as their coffin was carried out of a service. Did I dream it?

    OMG, CREEPY

    Mm.

  • Muse: The High Aesthetic Line, in reply to Lucy Stewart,

It’s really, really easy to underestimate how important good actors are to a film or TV program’s success; the writing is important, but really good actors can take a basically mediocre script beyond itself.

Please don't underestimate the importance of a really good director. Actors, even really, really good ones, who have been given no direction, or, as I suspect happens often, have no faith/trust in the director, will give their best, but it will not be a patch on what a good director can get them, by virtue of their being able to trust her/him, to take risks and be bloody marvellous as a result.

  • Hard News: Floating the idea, in reply to Dave M,

Yes, $45 per week for a bare 30 minutes (X 3, as there are three kids) is a lot of money. Had you thought of hiring a keen young college student instead? Someone who could swim well, and liked children, and would be happy to spend a few hours a week passing on the knowledge? (And be paid for their efforts?)

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit, in reply to Islander,

I’ve thought, ever since I read GE’s death-bed retort/reply, that she was entirely in command of her mind while dying.

I've just re-read what you said, Islander, and have to say that something must have fallen out of my brain over the past few days, given my (quite wrong) responses to various people's comments*, because for some reason I didn't understand what you'd said - it seemed like the complete opposite to what I see now. (You didn't do a sneaky edit when I wasn't looking, did you?) Anyway, forgive the lateness of my reply - I heartily agree with you. I think she knew exactly what she was saying.

*Not bad enough to need righting, however, but wrong nonetheless.
