  • OnPoint: Pay Attention,

it’s almost certain that he will be rendered to the Americans, and he won’t see the light of day for many years as their legal juggling, by deferring a trial, will keep him imprisoned, with all the horrors that will be for him.

    While I acknowledge this as a technical/physical possibility… I dont think (hope?) they’d dare….

Sure, they’ve done it in the past to lots of people…. but typically they were people “off the rader"…. the people that went missing or were detained at black sites or at Guantanamo outside normal US legal jurisdiction were mostly people we didnt know exist at all….

While the US may trump up some new type of bogus spying/confidentiality/treason/terrorism charges against Assange, and extradite him from swedish/english custody to US soil…. I seriously doubt they would try to actually disappear him, or even claim special non-standard military tribunal jurisdiction under the full glare of worldwide publicity…

We know where he is, and we know what he’s accused of…. they wouldnt dare try it on…. (surely?) Or am I just too naive?

  • Hard News: Spinning and soldiering,

It would be fair to say that Jon believes Garth had some help with his homework. Garth, in return, says he stands by everything he wrote. Things might get lively.

This would be a clue wouldnt it?

Were you perhaps intending to mention they would be your guests on a forthcoming Media 7?

    :)

  • Hard News: Popular Paranoiac Politics,

There’s more to it than making National look good or siphoning off nut cases.

I wasnt so much talking about making National look good, as providing a third leg, so that Act look more central…

Can you grow Act back into relevance by creating some loonies further out than them?

Because if you successfully grow Act, then they will have more influence in a future National/Act partnership than the current one.

(note- this all from the point of view of a right-wing-squillionaire who wouldnt notice the loss of 10% of his tax-cut being used to help a lame-duck party)

    {sorry- interruption during editing has made for a sort of delayed double-post}

  • Hard News: Popular Paranoiac Politics,

So, for the sake of argument…

If you were a right-wing squillionaire who was disappointed at the poor showing and low influence of your chosen right-of-National-party….

Might you not find it worthwhile to spend a small pittance on funding a extreme-right-of-National party… not because you think it’s got a shit-show of being elected, but just to make your chosen party seem less extreme (and maybe bleed off a few genuine nutters too)?

  • Random Play: Alt.Republic: The rolling mall,

St Lukes square/shopping centre/mall has been added to multiple times… (as have Lynn Mall and Henderson Square) over the three decades since I arrived in this country…

The first upgrade I remember was when they added the Big Fresh. The most recent was the cinemas over the food court, but there were probably two others in-between times?

  • Speaker: Dancing with Dingoes, Part II,

My mum recently came across a recipe for pumpkin cake!

I know it sounds bizzaire, but it's a bit like carrot cake (only better).

(imported car without a band-expanded stereo. You know how it is)

I do know how it is, and that is why in my wife's car, I listen to National Radio on AM.
It may not sound as nice, but the content is worth making the effort to hear over the crackle (mostly). :)

  • Hard News: Where nature may win, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Meanwhile, in that country that, apparently has no respect for human life or rights, they rescued their 29 miners within a day or so.

Ah, the news article I saw on BBC world last night said 22 miners and 7 rescue workers had to be rescued…

ie. the first rescue attempt failed and endangered more lives.
