  • Hard News: New Old Left?,

And 11% of people who gave their party vote to ACT in Epsom, voted for someone other than Rodney!

    WTF???

They wanted ACT in parliament, but only if it could make 5% without a life-line?

They wanted ACT in parliament, but really didnt like Hide?

They just didnt understand how the system works?

  • Speaker: My People,

Thankyou Jackie, great article, as others have said...

But, I just want to play devil's advocate for a second, to run a suggestion by you...

Seeing as attendance at kindy is not compulsory, could it be that you are already seeing a self-selected group of good parents? (ie. parent that care about their children's development and go out of their way to ensure it)

Perhaps the "bad parents" (from any area, but particularly ones where money is especially tight) are less inclined send their kids to pre-school?

  • Hard News: A few (more) words on The Hobbit,

It would be hard to have a membership meeting for an unregistered, legally non-existant organisation, wouldn't it?

    Actually, no, it's perfectly feasible.

I was on the committee of a car-club for several years, near the end of which, we became an incorporated society.

I assure you, before registering as an incorporated society, we had committee meetings, all-members AGM's, collected membership fees, and we thought we existed as a club. (I'm unsure of our legal status at the time), but we did all the things we kept doing after incorporation...

Actors Equity could definitely have had meetings with it's members regardless of the status of it's incorporation or it's legal ability to act as a bargaining agent. (note especially, it's pretty obvious they were either unaware of, or denying their current status.... so they would have continued to behave as if it hadnt changed).

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

I'm confused, is 3 foot 6 a different company to
3 foot 7 or are we selling one of them short?

I'm guessing they are, in order, the production companies for the LOTR and now Hobbit.

I expect they are essentially the same people in the same positions, but legally separate entities?

I expect SirPJ has a large shareholding in both.

    no knowledge... all guesswork

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

I wonder how much her 'brand' has been damaged by this episode.

I predict that if The Hobbit does indeed get made in NZ.... it will all wash over and the public will be happy to see Robyn in movies, TV, or on stage...

If it goes..... she'd better pop over to Aussie if she wants work in the next five, maybe ten years?

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

The MEAA factsheet claims they had legal advice "that there are a variety of lawful means which could be used to establish the minimum wages, working conditions and residuals for performers on the production". Was that advice accurate, incorrect or misinterpreted?

It seems MEAA misinterpreted their own legal advice... what we've seen of it suggest they could collectively bargain a set of non-legally-binding recommendations....

These "restrictions" about what they can legally bargain for collectively appear to very closely match their "issues" they claim to have against the "pink book".

MEAA/AE didnt want to re-negotiate the pink book because it was "mainly honoured in the breach"... it wasnt binding and the producers were frequently ignoring some/all of it....

But now it seems they are happy to sit down with SPADA and negotiate a set of non-binding recommendations, and they are touting this as a win!

As to the ongoing action (or lack there-of)..

My understanding (based on the above press release and a interview on Nat Radio over the long weekend) is, they promise:

    1) No action of any kind against The Hobbit
    2) No action against any other production as long as it conforms to current pink-book.
3)Actively engage in good-faith bargaining with Spada to .... They specifically do NOT say "re-negotiate the pink book" but that is what the words they do say actually mean.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

    Peter Cox said

it rather seems the MEAA have just been caught actively disguising the truth to their AE members, and as a result AE members have been caught disguising the truth on TV as well.

    You mean... again.

They did that way back when they first went public in response to PJ's press release. On TV (J W-L, I think?)"We are so a registered union, stop telling lies about us" (Paraphrased from memory) followed up a few days later at the Auckland actors meeting with "its just a minor admin issue, we'll sort it in a few days".

Plus the conflicting with themselves on whether they wanted to address issues industry wide or just Hobbit contract, and then whether they could indeed collectively bargain or not,

And, "there was never a boycott".. "It was lifted on Saturday".

As much as I sympathize with them wanting to change things, and support their ability to do so... not only have they gone about it poorly, they've been demonstrably not able to get their story straight (or telling outright porkies whilst accusing others of same) right from the start... which lends them no credence at all when they finally start singing from the same song sheet.

  • Hard News: Anatomy of a Shambles,

So, watching that video, then, this:

    {edited for brevity- Article about Robyn Malcolm needing a police escort which may or may not be true}

    Would be false then?

Actually.... watching that video (which mainly consisted of Mr Whipp and Ms Walsh walking down a street) would prove nothing about what did or didnt happen to Robyn Malcolm leaving the same place...
