Just as an aside, could we all stop talking about South Auckland as if it was this single entitied, many headed monster? Mangere East is different to Mangere Central is different to Yendarra is different to Flat Bush is different to Manurewa is different to Otahuhu. If you get my drift.

Do not murder.
Do not commit adultery.
Do not steal, and
Do not commit perjury.Hmm. Nope, we only agree on one of those. How messy. Where to now?

What would be the problem with having fundamentals as the basis of a legal system? Do you know what the fundamentals are?
How about you define what your fundamentals are, Grant? There are, I have found, very few fundamental truths in life, much as I would like there to be. Whose fundamentals would this legal system derive from? And of what fundamentals do you speak? That all life is precious? That there are certain rights inherent in being human? Discuss.

It is the opinions of the women who may have need of this procedure that counts. That's all women of child bearing age. That includes me.

I've never had a pregnancy termination but I did get my bitch spayed when she was very, very pregnant. It was a long time ago, and I still feel awful. However, I believe it was the right thing to do because 1) she would have been a dreadful mother 2) we were not ready for puppies and they wouldn't have had a great life. We had no-one who would have wanted bull terrier/whatever crosses. In my oh so humble opinion, the very problem with debate around abortion is exemplified by this thread. Dominated by opinionated men who are at one remove from the very emotional issue that it is, and arguing about things like when a baby becomes a baby, or the scientific definition of when cellular life becomes human. Chaps, I have news for you. It is not, in the end, for you to say. It is, in the end, for the women of this world. They may be in situations where consultation with their partners' is a suitable option. They may be single women who have to make the decision alone. Either way, it is their body. So it is up to them, ultimately. If you wish to make people feel guilty about choosing abortion, call it murder. Call it infanticide. Call it whatever you like. But remember, that ultimately, it is not your body. It is not your womb. It is not your call.

I'm with the keep to the left lobby. Or if you're on a b road and you aren't in a huge hurry, and there's traffic behind you, pull over. Sometimes we're in a bit of a rush because it's a matter of life and death, and we can't judge why others' are in a hurry, can we? I would just relate the story of the night my brother called me to tell my that my dad had had a cardiac arrest and to get to the hospital quickly. I tried, I really did, but I was stuck behind this man doing 40kph. It wasn't peak hour, it was 8pm, it wasn't on the motorway........I didn't know if my father was dead or alive, and I wanted to get there in time. My whole thing is this, and I try to remember it at all times - don't drive in a bubble. There are people all around you who have their own stories, their own needs. Try to drive with consideration for other people, and don't do shitty things just because you don't know these people. We're all in this together, and just because you are in a one ton machine doesn't make you exempt.

oh gawd, you're not one of those people who prints out their emails so they can read them are you?
Ah, no, I'm not. But then, being the sad pathetic print reading soul I am, I don't get many personal emails, so that doesn't enter the equation.

(and I'm not sure I want to break the habit of going through next week's tv listings with a highlighter).
OMG - I am enormously glad I am not the only person who does this, Venetia. I was a little embarrassed to say that that's the main reason I need the tv listings in print form.......

Oh, David. That is seriously lovely stuff. Tears in the eyes and all that. Bless.

Oh, how glorious on a Friday. Thanks guys! Particulary for Aretha, Miles, Donna Summer et al. Funk, disco, soul - count me in.
I like all sorts of music. But you can keep your dark serious punky stuff. Give me something I can belt out my lungs to, or dance till I'm shagged (well, not anymore, in my callow youth, mayhaps). To that end, two songs which happily provide an opportunity to do both..............we have to have some Earth, Wind and Fire
and definitely a little Banarama
