  • Hard News: Better, faster ... prettier,

I don't know why anyone would pay to get their TV listings on paper these days. There's several online.

Of course, Kyle, there is always that option. But there is nothing quite like sitting down in a comfy place - in my case, outside, with a ciggie - and perusing . You can't peruse, in the old fashioned sense, on a computer. Flicking through the pages etc - large part of it for me.

  • Hard News: Better, faster ... prettier,

Well, I, for one, still look forward to getting my Listener in the letterbox of a Saturday lunchtime. I was devastated that Braunias left, gutted that Black was even associated with the thing at all, and very disappointed that Finlay left. Still, and all. I like the book reviews and Diana Witchel. I enjoy the articles, mostly. And I look forward to Graham Brazier's poetry reviews, mostly because I can talk to him about them and it stops him from reading me his own poetry...(just kidding!). It has got less satisfying, I agree, but I just can't bring myself to buy the TV Guide.

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

Anon, what a dreadful decision to have to make, and how brave you are to have made the right decision. My sincere condolences on the loss of your baby girl.
I have nothing to say about abortion that hasn't been said already by a number of my PA sisters. I just wanted to let you know that you aren't alone, so thankyou for sharing that.

  • Hard News: Debating Clydesdale,

I have worked, lived and been friends with many people of many races, creeds, ages and orientations; so can't be called prejudiced.

Honest, Guv'nor, my best friend's Maori/PI/gay...... We're all prejudiced, mate, in one way or another. Man up.

  • Hard News: Debating Clydesdale,

we see ourselves as the continuation of a stream of consciousness that stretches back millenia

The Maori call that Te Taura Tangata, the Great Rope of Man. The collective consciousness. I like the thought of that, very much.

With all the people that move to South Auckland and sit around on the dole, before they discover gangs and P, someone has to speak out.

Someone has to speak out? You think that you're the only palagi to speak of dolebludging, and useless bloody brown people? Come on now, Simon. There are alot of shouting voices out there saying exactly the same thing, so you can't possibly think you're the only one.

And, I might add, as a person who works in South Auckland, I find that statement highly offensive. As a person who teaches the children of first and second generation Pacific Island families, I find your entire post offensive, and highly ignorant to boot. I teach 90 children every day from Pacific Island families, of mixed socioeconomic status. I owe my love of teaching to these people, to people who trust me with their children, and make me one of the family. Who accept me for who I am. Because I extend them the same courtesy. One would think that they would treat me as an outsider in their midst but they have embraced me as one of theirs. Where I teach, at my kindergarten, we have statements of teaching practice that encompass what we hold dear. One of the things we talk about is the importance of being able to hear another's story without judgement. I suggest you try it, without the hindrance of generality or fear. You might learn something.

  • Hard News: Don Paul,

And without presuming to speak for the rest of the gullible Tory-Borg, could it also be within the realm of possibility that one can actually be ever so slightly 'right-wing' or 'conservative' without the clinging perfume of sulphur about one's person? Just saying...

God, I love you, Craig. If it was you standing up there to be PM instead of slimy yukky Keys, I might even vote National for once in my life. Did I say that? Anyway, for your turn of phrase, I salute you, sir.

  • Hard News: Don Paul,

I don't think the twenty year old smoking ban in the London Underground is proof of creeping fascism

And that ban was put in place for a very good reason. I was living in London in 1987 when the Kings Cross fire happened. And that was started by a dropped cigarette.

quote>after the very successful weight loss programme<</quote> I hear you. Ian always used to say that cancer was a great weight loss tool. Black humour helps.

I may be preaching to the converted, but I think everyone needs to listen to this man give his testimony.

thats probably cos chemo is a bit of a diet killer,

That's a shit, Sofie. My husband had intensive chemo, and it's a buggery bastard of a thing. To boost his appetite he used herbal remedies. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink....Worked a treat. He still looked skeletal, but at least he was eating.
