You know what, rob(bery)? Why don't you just say you're an artist who was denied funding by NZOA? I can't figure out any other good reason why you would be so invested in all this. What Brendan said on Media7 sounded perfectly obvious to me. NZOA is in the business of broadcasting. Therefore, any funding they give needs to have at least a reasonable amount of airplay to justify their investment. I understand that. My brother has, in the last couple of years, been the recipient of NZOA funding. Some would question that, but as it happens, in 2005, his group had great amounts of radio play. Whether or not you like the music that his group makes is irrelevant. They got airplay for a song that was funded entirely by themselves, they get NZOA funding because they had proven to be broadcastable. I certainly would agree that there isn't enough support for NZ artists from the mainstream media, and I don't know the ins and outs of the music business, so I'm not entirely qualified to talk about funding issues, but I do know this. New Zealand On Air is an agency to get New Zealand On Air. Simple enough. Their brief would be, I assume, to get return for any investment made. Why hold Smythe solely responsible for the complicated issues that seem to surround NZ musicians getting their music heard? Like I said, there can only be one reason a person would do that. FFS, if it's good enough for the very talented and lovely Samuel Scott, why isn't it good enough for you?

Now listen little mate of the 'over-30 sad douchebag comment': I wear hoodies throughout winter. They are Glowing Skies merino hoodies- they are warming, from your arse to the top of your head. They are necessary (especially if you live in my kind of weatherzone.) They are *not* the sole province of disaffected yoof, real or wannabee. And I have been wearing hoodies for nearly 20 years-
My sentiments, exactly. I'm wearing a hoodie. I like hoodies. (I'm assuming by hoodie, one means a sweatshirt with a hood?) I work with little people, and this necessitates me spending a good deal of my week outside. Therefore, at this particular time of year, a warm sweatshirt with a hood is a must, I find. But then I've never been one to be told what people my age should wear. I still wear leggings from time to time too - I rather fancy my legs, even if no-one else does.

I was sorry the debate wasn't able to go on longer. It seems to me that Gray Bartlett is mostly concerned with the fact that none of the "country" acts are given NZOA funding. But as Brendan says, the whole idea of giving music acts money is that there is a reasonable amount of airplay as an expectation. They are, after all, called NZ on AIR. Surely Creative NZ are the ones that should be answering criticisms, or the NZ Music Commission? As an aside, Russell, you appear to be way more comfortable in front of the cameras. Like your relaxed style.

Really, David, you have to think about publishing such stories. Absobloodylutely hilarious, my friend. I love characters, and when you have the ability to write prose that makes us want to read more about them, surely you should oblige?
