  • Cracker: That's Not My Name,

I had a grudging sympathy for the father of the red-haired boys. He was trying to say, I think, that we have double standards. We are horrified by "darkies" but cool about "gingas". Red-haired people he said were people with very white skin and so it's not just a hair issue but a skin colour issue. Does that make sense?

(If Mark Sainsbury had been doing his job better he might have introduced the idea that "ginga" does not have the racist connotations of other ethnic epithets and gone from there.)

I am bemused by the rise of the "ginga" stuff. It certainly wasn't there when I started teaching but in the last decade or so it has become chronic. There was a delightful episode on South Park a year or two ago and Summer Heights High dealt with it well too. But in schools it can be seen as a bullying issue.

Steve Braunias wrote an amusing column in the SST where Sarah Ferguson is enveloped in the arms of a large NZer.

  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

FWIW, I think Kim Hill did a good job of interviewing Linda Bryder, who seemed to be thorough and credible, and crucially in the follow-up the week after to test that credibility in interviewing Charlotte Paul, allowing a clear conclusion that Bryder got it very wrong.

You might be right. I can't remember exactly what got my goat now but it seemed to me that she was easy on Bryder and harder on Paul. The emails to RNZ - about the Bryder interview - would seem to confirm that many had this impression.

And what about The Listener? "The Cartwright Inquiry got it wrong" plastered on the front page. And recently a statement by Stirling that it was their "call" to favour Bryder's view of events.

I suppose I sensed an anti-feminist, anti-Sandra Coney backlash here and I didn't like it, it was wrong and it hasn't been atoned for yet.

  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

And, while Kim Hill has few muffs/stupidities in her portfolio, the interview with Bryder remains one of 'em.

I agree with that, Islander. I have long been a fan and was disappointed in her. Maybe it is too early for a response from The Listener and RNZ? I thought One News was unequivocal and even quite passionate tonight but then again I could have been imagining that!

  • Hard News: A Real Alternative,

Where does this leave Pamela Stirling who maintained recently that she believed Linda Bryder rather than the Cartwright Report? I also wonder about Kim Hill who was soft on Bryder and mocked (apparently) those who sent in emails to criticise her interview.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

even doing a deal with ITV to re-screen the first half dozen eps of Corrie.

Yeah! It's hard to get a proper sequence of back copies of Coro St. Why haven't they sold it on DVD BTW?

And Craig, you are extremely good at writing about TV. You would make a better job of TV reviews than Karl de Fresne:) In the Listener.

  • Hard News: The Future of the Future,

I reckon that most people watch TV out of habit and that means without thinking. It's like smoking cigarettes.

I dunno. There's a lot of media education going on out there at the mo.

For my own part, I can watch Coro St and enjoy it while at the same time analysing (and despairing at) the soap opera logic and treasuring some of the artfully written lines.

OTOH, watching The Wire on DVD (finished a month ago) has spoilt me for just about everything else and I'm just starting to descend to Coro level again. People have said this already but The Wire proves how wonderful TV can be. A 2 - 3 hour film could never deliver the richness that is The Wire:)

  • Southerly: The Burglar Files,

A touch of Frank Sargeson? "A Great Day".

And that recent novel "The Lazy Boys" by Carl Shuker.

But you are so very good all on your own.

    Don't mind me.

I won't mind you if you don't mind me and my half-baked opinions:)

At least we're not the passionless people, eh?

  • Hard News: What we have really lost,

You reckon Tuhoe thought that about the change of ownership in the 1800's?

I feel guilty for arguing about this when I haven't done my homework and read the history. My original point point was that I disagreed with Russell's post. He maintained that most NZers would not venture into the Ureweras and put that forward as one argument in favour of giving the land back. Confiscated land should be returned, yes. I've just got this awful habit of trying to analyse my own knee jerk feelings and reactions and trying to figure out how they fit into the pool of national feelings out there.
