that people don't have the skills and experience to redirect anger, frustration, hurt etc, into non-violent channels
I would buy that in some cases, but often wonder why violent people are able to control themselves in a public place or when they're surrounded by other, equally physically strong people - yet somehow can't manage to control themselves at home.
If domestic violence is (in my personal experience of it, at least) more about someone being a controlling douchebag, anger management techniques are, I believe, less useful. Some of these people can control their own anger just fine: it's just that they don't actually care how any member of their family feels at the receiving end of it.
I don't know how you make them care, either. Is there such a thing as empathy training?

I have a (diehard Democrat) friend who always bets a few hundred dollars on the Republican candidate to win, about a year out from the election. Thus, if his guy loses, at least he gets a cheque in the mail to comfort him. He got a new electric guitar in 2004. It was scant comfort, apparently.
In November he lost all his money and was pretty damn stoked. :)

Dumbass A reporting for duty: how is being a wife incompatible with being a writer?
(Also, did you just call Emma a hypocrite?)

Why don't I ever understand anything Mark says?

On the other hand, the new civil rights section of whitehouse.gov (which apparently went live at 12.01pm EST, because these people are pretty onto it!) spends a fair amount of time talking about ending discrimination against LGBT Americans. So yay for that.

He had a rare chance, there, too: to execute the office of the president unfaithfully for a few precious minutes.
We entertained some speculation about this too. How could his unfaithful execution manifest itself? But then we realised we'd just had eight whole years of someone doing that, so...

Rick Warren was a sucky choice, no question. I suppose he was meant to be a signal to the wingnuts that Obama is 'your president too'. But... ick. Crap signal to a lot of other people.
Paul wins the dedication to the cause award! 3.45am is horrifying.
Two amusing things:
1. Dick Cheney in a wheelchair. Oh, schadenfreude, how sweet you taste.
2. Aretha Franklin's wacked-out head-bow fascinator thingy. She brings the crazy!

Not a terrible speech, but lots of platitudes and cliches
I actually thought the speech was pretty hard-edged in comparison to his pre-presidential, 'don't frighten the horses' speeches. Many implied 'Bush, you totally suck and here is why' moments in there.
(He also mentioned atheists. Baby steps, I suppose.)
I seriously could not be happier to see Bush disappear in that helicopter. Godspeed, douchebag.

Well, the MySky guide seems to have things kicking off on various channels at 5am. Although I'm not sure whether that's a lot of hoo-ha and the actual ceremony is some time after that...

Is anyone else here as totally-US-politics-nerdy as me, and setting an alarm to watch it live?
