  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

And, for what it's worth, I'm also in favour of the rofflenui spelling.

    Et tu, Brute?

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

<quote> And you're just being patronising, Danielle.

Oh FFS. (That's my acronym of the year by a country mile.) I wasn't, but whatever.

I vote for the 'roflnui' spelling also, for whatever that's worth. 'Roff le Nui'. Heh.

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

And anti-Semitism is a thing of the past?

You're just being wilfully obtuse now, Craig. You remember which country we're talking about, right? The United States, with the slavery and the Jim Crow and the civil rights movement and Dr King and whatnot? My Dad grew up in a segregated south; now there is a *self-identified black dude* as POTUS. Sorry, but that is a big fucking deal.

John Key's mum is Jewish? Yeah, interesting, but frankly: not such a big fucking deal. History. Context.

Pardon me if I call bullshit right back at you.

I didn't call bullshit. I said it was a false equivalence, and I think that stands.

I really don't get the hostility around the equally descriptive -- and more accurate -- description of Obama as America's first bi-racial President

    Wait. The hostility is where?

I think there is some *discomfort* with this 'he's not actually black, so we can all rest easy' commentary floating around in some circles. Because it implies that if he was totally black, that would be a bad thing, somehow. The discomfort isn't about the fact of the biracialness.I feel like you're conflating those two things.

(I am weirdly reminded of Stephen Colbert by this conversation. 'I don't see race!' Heh.)

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

John Key being of Jewish descent isn't the same thing at all. Context, history... I'm calling 'false equivalence' here.

reductive labels being put on women because of what they look like

Like... what? I mean, I *am* a woman. That's not all I am, but describing me as a woman isn't 'reductive'. It's 'descriptive'. So how is calling Obama the first black president reductive rather than descriptive? Particularly given all that context and history? I don't really get you on this point.

(Cajun fraction, while we're here: 1/2. Maori fraction: uh, what's 1/4th of 3/4ths? That, anyway. I failed maths in sixth form, which might have helped with that equation.)

Heather, paragraph two of your post is what I would have written if I was capable of it. Thanks!

    Lionel Richie's 'All Night Long'

Weirdly, I too listened to that song ironically on Saturday night! (Erm. Well, perhaps it wasn't being *played* ironically, but I certainly heard it that way.)

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

    we're talking ethnicity, not race

    Ding ding ding! A winner.

(Craig, I find your 'thing' about this kind of weird... it's not as if anyone is out there denying that his mother is white.)

...All the lefties think that he's sly
He's got John Key's Tranzrail eyes
    <electronic handclaps>

(Did you know that 'Bette Davis Eyes' was co-written by Jackie DeShannon? I just learned that!)

I only *wish* I'd come up with rofflenui!

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

    " you know what ?"

Ah, but that has a useful purpose, as a precursor. For example: 'you know what? Bite me.' If you just said 'bite me' with no preamble, it wouldn't have that whole 'call and response' insult thing going on, and it wouldn't be nearly as satisfying.

'Stimulus package' makes me think of dirty things. Am I alone in that?
