• Muse: DIGITAL LINKY LOVE, in reply to Sacha,

now it sounds like a place when you capitalise it :)

Sounds like a village on the Smut branch line. Boobage, Sandy Balls, Rimswell, Hole of Horcum, Fingringhoe, pass through Fanny Hands Lane and your service terminates at Titlington Mount.

• Muse: DIGITAL LINKY LOVE, in reply to Tom Beard,

I thought that graphic sex acts were their own reason?

Generally, not -- Tyrion's whore-habit does have a point, and a rather poignant one. The topless extras roaming around every damn Dothraki scene (oh, those wild uninhibited natives!) and adding nothing to the scene with Littlefinger. It's almost like there's a timewarp back to the more innocent days of 70's Eurotrash sexploitation when boobies were delightful shorthand for "we are so decadent". But if that was at all interesting, I'd go buy a stack of Tinto Brass DVDs.

I do get that HBO isn't exactly the Cartoon Network. We had a whole episode of Sex and the City that was about getting Charlotte over her fear of anal totally destroying her marriage prospects. The Bada-Bing! was serving up lap dances not high teas; and Trixie didn't make her way in Deadwood selling aromatherapy candles and full-body clothed Reiki treatments.

But no amount of tit (or long hanging peen, come to that) is going to mask the sound of ill-written exposition clunking over the points.

• Hard News: We are all Twitter, in reply to Steve Parks,

Why wouldn’t they just move that rhetoric to the day before, then. There would still be no right of reply, as no one could respond on election day.

Well, quite -- I don't think it was a coincidence that Jim Bolger waited until his last television interview of the campaign to fuck over Mark Thomas. (Yes, I'm still bitter. No, I'm not going to get over it.)

• Hard News: We are all Twitter, in reply to Graeme Edgeler,

We have this law because:

* politicians can stuff off – today is about us the voters;
* we want people to be able to vote without being harassed by people outside polling places who might scare them off: can’t be bothered going through all that, etc;
* we actually like the serenity – it feels like democracy;

Quite – and I have friends in Australia who find being (legally) harassed by party hacks outside polling places singularly unpleasant. I’ve done a fair amount of scrutineering over the years, and it’s actually quite pleasant having Election Day being one where folks like me just STFU, smile sweetly and stay the hell out of the way of the people who really matter. We’ve had a whole campaign to hoot, holler and make ding-dongs of ourselves. :)

I suppose I don’t really care either way, but we are talking about a law that could fine you $20,000 for an indiscreet tweet or facebook status. Man, you must be doing something pretty damn serious.

FFS, Martin, we're not talking rocket science here. "Indiscreet" is how you describe someone letting off an arse-cracker in church, not flouting a law that's neither complex nor terribly onerous.

Dilemma of the modern age: I blundered by watching the pilot first, I’m unsure in what order to tackle the three aired episodes, any suggestions welcomed!

Oh, you really need to stick to the air order because (spoilers sweetie!) 'The Great Game' ends on one hell of a cliffhanger that's pretty nicely set up in 'A Study in Pink' and teased out in 'The Blind Banker'. Would be interested to know what you think of the pilot though. I understand it's the same story as the aired version, but I understand the BBC thought the storytelling and character development felt a bit rushed.

• Hard News: The Political Lie, in reply to Sacha,

Brian Edwards posts about the show and its topic.

Very interesting post, but I really hope Dr. Edwards isn't telling his political clients that it's somehow dirty pool to hold politicians to account for their own public statements and voting records. As I said way up-thread, I think folks are actually pretty reasonable. People are entitled to change their minds, but they're not entitled to act like they never changed them at all. And, yes, I think it's perfectly legitimate to ask Phil Goff why he voted to raise GST in 1989, but thinks it's evil incarnate now. Or when Comrade Key found his comfort zone with "communism by stealth." :)

• Hard News: The Political Lie, in reply to Steve Barnes,

Well, I thought the person responsible would be the owner of the site but, apparently, mentioning that is “Offensive”.

FFS, Steve, how about we hold the sodding Labour Party responsible since the authorisation statement was in the name of the party secretary-general and gave the address of the Labour's national office?

If Chris Flatt would like to assure me on the record that the whole thing is a fake, I'll take his word for it. But given the name of this thread, I warn the irony might make my head explode.

Are you an expert on the litigation record of the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce now?

Of course not – after turning off Safe Search and looking for pictures of phallic garden ornaments the interwebz broke. Now, I’m NOT claiming any bloody expertise in a legal bog like trademark/intellectual property law. (If I was, you'd be running up quite a tab.) What I’m suggesting is that it might be wise not to presume the HCC has a slam-dunk case because you very obviously think the other side are a pack of douche-orcs.

@Andin: If I can avoid slandering people, could you please avoid making dodgy insinuations about the recreational proclivities of people who might be feeling more than usually tetchy (and litigious) at the moment?

@Gio. You might want to be a little more precise in your use of terms like "plagiarise". Would also note that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is rather prone to making legal threats, but as I understand it they're on rather shaky legal ground here if they want to get beyond rather bog-standard sabre-ratting. Sill, nice to know there are some evil Yankee arses we should kiss after all. To be entirely self-interested, perhaps the HCC would like to give intellectual property/trademark specialists A.J. Park and ask for my sister -- she'd love the work. :)

OK, I'm going to be offline until late tomorrow morning but would like to thank you all for the restrained (for the most part) and thoughtful discussion. The swill that's landed in my e-mail is quite another matter, but has been dealt with.

Play nice, y'all.
