Lake Taharoa, near Dargaville, is one of my favourites. One of the clearest lakes in NZ, due to its sandy substrate and lack of surface inflows.

How fantastic to see that Luke Hurley is still going strong. Great memories of listening to him while relaxing in the sun in Vulcan Lane many years ago.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: When there were…,

The music, it must be said, is mostly pretty poor. Golden Harvest and Schtung sound indifferent

Heh. The guitarist from Schtung came and gave a lunch-time solo concert at my school, around about that time, 78 or 79. Several teachers (all of that generation) told us how this guy was amazing and we just *had* to go...so we did. Cue an hour of the most boring, noodling self-indulgent guitar twiddling you've ever heard in your life. I got a detention by yelling out "so when does it start?" after he finally stopped.

  • Capture: Two Tales of a City, in reply to Lilith __,

Thanks Lilith - Kia Kaha Sumner! Best little village in the world. Now if we can just get rid of the white zoning:-(

People-watching around Sumner always made me think of Dennis Glover's poem...

Cave Rock is made of toffee, and the sea of lemonade
and the little waitress wavelets are always on parade
When cars roll down to Sumner on a Sunday.

The ice cream mountain on the blue is free for anyone
and Scarborough Head looms solid as a tearoom tuppeny bun
When Mum and Dad are glum or glad, at Sumner on a Sunday.

And wistfully the children sit, whilst army trombones teach
That only Christ, not Cortes, can land upon the beach.
At Sumner when the sea rolls in, at Sumner on a Sunday.

    Raupo pollen?

Raupo rhizomes are a wonderful source of starch - I have baked good bread from raupo rhizome. Not just raupo, but also kuta and most of the other tall wetland sedges have good starchy rhizomes too. If our modern technological society does ever collapse, I'm heading to my nearest wetland for my subsistence lifestyle.

  • Muse: What The Frig, Police?, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Perhaps the Police also need reminding that KRS-One is the man who founded the "Stop the Violence Movement" in rap. So when Insp Davison says:

type of event – rap draws on a certain group within society which cause problems for the community as a whole

I'd say he at the very least owes KRS-One an apology. In fact if he was insinuating that KRS-One tries to "draw on a certain group within society which cause problems", that to me verges on defamation.

  • Field Theory: Fight Club, in reply to Just thinking,

The key to the great hate of oneway is that they effectively bypass whatever they go through. Where as a normal two way street has a cross pollination and assists in the creation of a neighbourhood.

I never found that to be the case in Christchurch though. If I was needing to get through town quickly they were a godsend, but at the same time they were still comfortable and easy to negotiate and fed logically to most destinations if I was going somewhere in town. Maybe they start to be nasty and impersonal in bigger cities if you start getting four or five lanes wide, but ours were still only two lanes and most of the one-way streets were human-sized and human-scaled. Actually, they were often easier to cross as a pedestrian than the two-way streets, because the traffic was in waves and there were more gaps. Durham St especially was like that.

I cannot understand why they want to make this expensive decision now, when whatever money is available should be going to help people who've lost their homes. It seems totally premature when we haven't even finished the discussion about what the city centre should end up looking like.

    the theme meme...
    one of my yoof-ful favourites...

I see your UNCLE and raise you WHO.

Is it just me, or was the first one always way spookier and creepier than any of the others?
