  • Hard News: And one war ends?,

keeping the well-understood drug illegal and preparing to approve new ones

This is what has bugged me about the whole 'synthetic cannabis' scare. Most of the synthetic versions are dangerous, or have appeared to cause dangerous effects, yet the actual cannabis itself is relatively benign (overconsumption of super-strength strains by vulnerable individuals notwithstanding). Why not go with the better-understood natural version?

And do all the synthetic strains taste as bad as the one I tried? It was rank, compared to real cannabis leaf/bud.

  • Hard News: The GCSB Bill: We at least…, in reply to Ian Dalziel,

Oh, we must always question him. Incessantly, until he "leaves the building".

  • Southerly: Now I Am Permitted, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

So...it's a cross that is also a gate?

Reminding me of the one about the Catholic god who is The One God, but is also, at the same time, 3 gods and, at times, a biscuit.

  • Hard News: Kitchen Hacks, in reply to Bart Janssen,

We did just the same when building our place, so we have an electric oven and gas hob. As you say, a full bottle lasts 'ages' (8+ months at a guess), you get the instant temperature control & all the benefits. Just make sure you've got a spare, full bottle of gas around for when it runs out. Takes me about 3min to swap bottles & get back to the kitchen.

  • Up Front: Somebody Think of the Young Adults!,

    Thank you, Emma, for this.
Given that we have a sizeable population of parents who are extremely uncomfortable talking to their childeren about sexual matters, I feel it is important that they get a realistic depiction of sex rather than relying on the plasticised 'internet porn version'.

Your point about the internal narrative and the doubts and fears that abound is well made. It's a shame all parents aren't as sensible about these topics.

The car-ownership figure will also be distorted by how poor the public transport is in most places in NZ. At least the larger urban centres with some decent provision of public transport can allow people to dispense with car-ownership. Not so easy in almost any rural setting.

  • Hard News: Media3: We have much to discuss,

That link about Metiria Turei seems to be mis-represented. She's only asking that the Race Relations Conciliator do some investigating which is not the same as 'demanding prosecution'.
(Apologies if I have missed something in my quick once-through of the linked post.)

  • Hard News: SpinCity, in reply to Kumara Republic,

It’s yet another symptom of the nation being run from a golf cart on a country club green, instead of Parliament.

Me & my golf buddies reject your portrayal of golf. None of us would run the country in as authoritarian and right-of-centre manner.

Besides, you'd get shot for taking your golf cart onto 1 of the greens.

  • Hard News: Competing for Auckland,

Maybe we just don't all earn enough - well, most of us.

If you restrict that to money that is truly 'earned', then I think it is a fair proposition & doesn't need the final caveat.
Get all that un-earned income out of the equation - that actual workers are not paid well enough.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Heavy Metal's…, in reply to bob daktari,

I'm not really a session drinker (any more) so the couple I had were just fine - reasonable level of hoppiness & a nice smooth finish.
