  • Island Life: An imperfect use of a newspaper,

Paul, believe me. You're better off not having the damned thing!

You'd think a catchment of what, one and a quarter million people, could support a competing daily newspaper?

(not necessarily a lefty one, just a different one!)

  • Ways to Go,

Cheers Bob, that confirms my suspicions!

There was an article in The Times (I think) lamenting the fact that the cost of licencing music for movies prevented there being much original music in the film. I understand Moving on Up by Primal Scream is in there somewhere, which isn't exactly appropriate to 1973-4. The soundtrack CD leans heavily on the GP Tribute put together by Emmylou a few years ago, which is preety good. There's also one from about 14-15 years ago called Commemorativo or something that is pretty awful. Mostly "alternative" types who don't really have the vocals to pull it off - Bob Mould for example doing Hickory Wind. I think Martin Philips is on there somewhere too.

I saw the two docos that were on the BBC about five years ago, but should make the effort to track them down. There's apparently a good documentary on Roky Ericson that did the Film Festival a few years ago that I'd like to see.

And getting back to Keith Richards, he's been quoted as saying the one he'd really like to have back is GP, so the guy clearly made an impression!

  • Ways to Go,

Strangely enough, as an atheist my only real connection with religion is through country music and Curnyn's para really makes sense!

I was listening to Emmylou's new record this morning and it's good so far. Might be better than Red Dirt Girl even. My fave is her one failure as a solo artist - The Ballad of Sally Rose - a concept album about a young singer who is discovered by an established star. She joins his band and he teaches her about the music. She realises she's in love with him just as he dies in a car crash, then goes on to make her own career celebrating her mentor along the way. Sound familiar? (Reminds me of Robbie Robertson in The Last Waltz - "The Road's taken a lot of good people...Hendrix, Janis...Elvis...")

I found Kaufman strangely unlikeable in that doco. He's clearly proud of doing right by his friend, but... His reminiscences about the Burrito's tour are funny though. I really think Hillman is an under-appreciated musician - he does a fantastic version of Eight Miles High with mandolins, banjos and guitars (also on emusic).

  • Hard News: Medical Matters,

You should keep an eye on them. You might be surprised how prolific they are around Maori and other Polynesian communities. Various members of the Maori party certainly seem to feel there's value in keeping on their good side.

Density Church/Family Party are all over Mangere at the minute. Local candidate Jerry Filipaina is at Mangere Market every Saturday making himself visible. Time for Labour to start upping their profile too, given the result last time.

  • Ways to Go,

Clarence White was a phenomenal guitar picker, idolised by Hendrix no less. He introduced the Byrds to a bunch of traditional country songs - he's far more important to the Byrds than GP! My fave late Byrds record is The Ballad of Easy Rider, way better than Sweetheart of the Rodeo, IMHO.

I'll check out the Ralph Stanley version if I can track it down. There's a Clarence White album on eMusic called White Lightning (?), which is apparently very good.

  • Ways to Go,

The Beeb also did a couple of documentaries about five years ago. One on GP and one on Emmylou Harris, which are wll worth finding. I think the GP one was shown at the Auckland Film Festival in 2005, but it might be different. A fair few interviews with Phil Kaufman, Chris Hillman, Emmylou, that guy from the Eagles whose name escapes me.

    That's a great phrase :)

  • Ways to Go,

I knew Parsons had died young but not the circumstances.

There's also a film, of dubious quality (got the soundtrack, not seen the film. Recommend the version of__A Song for You__ by Whiskeytown): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Parsons

Meditating on this, I would include a reading from the book of John & Paul (maybe Mother Nature's Son, or Child of Nature) and the singing of a hymn, either Turn Turn Turn by the Byrds or Farther Along, by the Flying Burrito Brothers.

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

Doesn't Lange muse about his father dropping Bassett on his head when he was born?

In his book, I mean. clearly.

  • Hard News: Breaking up the Band,

And we have Bassett to thank for his part in creating our messy local govt structure in Auckland. Did he actually do anything useful?

That's a bit harsh, he fucked up local government in lots of other places too, not just lovely Auckland.

Doesn't Lange muse about his father dropping Bassett on his head when he was born?

Lange's not perfect, but when you judge him by his immediate successors in PM & Labour Party Leader, Muldoon & Rowling, and his successors - Palmer, Moore & Bolger, he's a freakin' giant. And he had to deal with Douglas & Prebble too.

  • Hard News: Too Good to Be True,

Ahem. Some of us are married to people who like ESPN.

I cringed when I realised Sky got the ESPN version of the European Cup final. Fcuking appalling. It's like asking the English to give coverage & analysis of the Stanley Cup.
