  • Ways to Go,

I'd rather not be embalmed, just let the worms etc get stuck in. My only concrete request at this stage is that they play You're Gonna Miss Me as they carry me out of the place where the service is held (prob my wife's marae, I guess).

    A heartbreaking moment:

We recently buried my 2 year-old nephew. After tea and sandwiches at his grandmother's house, my son asked who was going to go and collect Pressie, cos he'll be lonely and scared in the hole we'd put him in.

  • OnPoint: Colby Blues,

You're in the wrong place. You want talkback radio. down the street, first on the left.

First on the left is actually the Trotter's office. Talkback is first on the right.

Heh - I think "rule" is probably a word they'll try & avoid.

But "Govern with an iron fist" doesn't have the same ring to it.

Your guilty consciences may make you vote Democratic, but secretly you all yearn for a Republican president to lower taxes, brutalize criminals, and rule you like a king!

  • Cracker: Policy State,

I probably wouldn't love our media either, if I was in her position...

Ray Miller used to have Helen speak to his Intro to NZ politics class, I don't know if he still does. When I saw her in 1996 (prior to the election that year) she gave a brilliant talk about her values and challenges as a politician and opened the floor to questions afterwards (not pre-selected either). There was an inevitable question about being a woman in politics and the focus on appearance, to which she made a passing reference to Bill Birch's big nose - that was the only bit they bothered to screen on the news that night.

As for HC post-politics, she might just choose to retire to the feminist lesbian wicca orgy that Wishart fantasises about when he jacks off every night. And who'd blame her for that?

(Here's hoping she doesn't do what retiring cricketers do and pick up the microphone after retiring from the game.)

Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, a dopey headline is just a dopey headline and there's no subtext under the text.

Well, Craig, we disagree. Quelle surprise!

but quantity doesn't always translate into quality. And a difference of emphasis doesn't make someone evil incarnate.

Strangely enough, here we agree. Let's also agree that you like how your side does it, and I like how my side does it. (please don't stake "your side" and "my side" too seriously, I'm sure you know what I mean)

However, I don't think this post or many of the comments are about big govt vs small govt so much, but about the Herlad's use of the phrase pork barrell politics, their apparent political agenda, and a the unwillingness of Auckland's leading (only) daily to look too deeply into the National Party's policy agenda. (I'm not putting words in anyone' mouth here, I hope)

The cynicism in that headline absolutely astounded me.

It looks very anti-labour cos the Nats have no policy yet worth spitting on, but I read it as a coded warning that National should not be putting itself as Labour-lite.

After this long on the opposition benches the Nats would be government by Christmas if the Drover's Dog was leading them (just like in Aus, US, UK - long periods of government aren't good for anybody's ego). To steal a headline from the Poms, Key just has to plot a straight course cos the Labour plane is going down...

  • Indiana Jonesing,

McCain's not sitting around with his thumb up his arse until the Democrats make up their mind. He's on the campaign trail now, and it would be nice if the media got their heads around that.

Yes, I agree with you there. However the US media (and most of the rest of us) are more interested in the shit fight amongst the Democrats for now.

There's a saying about men not dying in their sleep cos they can't do two things at once. The political media seems a bit like that.

When the focus shifts to the main event, McCain will come under the scrutiny you want to see. First things first.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

Which I don't think is necessarily a good thing -- he's gotten a near total pass on his own batshit pastor problem (with the important distinction that, unlike Obama and Jeremiah Wright, he's solicited and received endorsements from paranoid bigots).

Let's not forget we are still in primary season. McCain might not be getting the grilling that Obama & Clinton have received of late, but it will come. The Democrat candidate will have had any skeletons well and truly de-closeted by the time the Presidential campaign starts and will benefit from any extra scrutiny that is put on McCain's candidacy. Still early in the process. It is just unusual to be having a primary contest continue this late in the year.

More to the point - who will play young Bilbo?

    Another string to Russell's bow?
