[JG] What was up with that? She's just going to keep them in a special penguin box in the cupboard?

Oh, probably not in the cupboard. Maybe on display in the china cabinet.

[SD] I don't know what fondant is. I have so much to learn.

It's the ungodly sweet white stuff you get on trad wedding cakes. In the baking aisle at Woolworths it's called "Pettinice white icing".

You can also make it yourself easily enough (recipes on internet) although I probably wouldn't bother - it's not like "homemade" tastes any better (sugary goo is sugary goo), and the monetary difference is small enough that you might just consider it a fair trade for not having to do the sticky dishes.

Now now, with two over three your mind can start turning to indentured labor as a first solution to all life's fiddly little issues. You could even make it a party activity. Make a penguin! Then we'll stick it on the cake! Then you can take it home! Because nobody else wants your germy penguin anyway! (Note for the sticker-shocked: use rolled fondant instead of marzipan. Tell yourself it's because the kids wouldn't like the almond flavor anyway.)

Not that I wouldn't send you a bunch of penguins, more that I doubt they'd survive the trip.

Wallace-and-Grommit-style penguins are ridiculously easy - apply within for directions if you can't infer them from the finished product.

  • Hard News: Nerd Dad,

I saw the 1982 movie of Swamp Thing on TV the other day. Leaving aside its general awfulness, the most striking thing for me was the realization that Ray Wise did not in fact spring into being fully-formed at the age of 40ish.

  • Hard News: Nerd Dad,

I'm still wondering what happened to my own childhood box of Bunty, Tammy & June, Misty,my brother's Whizzer & Chips..

    Yes! These!

Sadly, I know for a fact that mine have all disappeared back into the endless cycle of school fairs from whence they came.

My sister and I especially liked Misty. I was just reading about these comics on wikipedia last week - apparently Misty, Tammy and Jinty were sibling comics where each had a general theme. It wasn't hard to pick this up for Misty, but I hadn't really cottoned on to Jinty being SF-ish.

Maybe I should start a collection.

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

"It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains."

And then there's Twelfth Night Of The Living Dead...

Everyone knows that mc^2 is way better than E. This is political correctness gone mad.

  • Hard News: Only in a relative sense,

I'd be more in favour of forced sale, and replacement (and possibly, payment of price differential if applicable) by a short-range, speed-limited electric vehicle.

There are several ways that could go...

    - "Ew, electric vehicles are only for criminals, I'd never get one."
    - "I'm gonna get an electric vehicle so people will think I'm hard core."

...or both, I suppose. Perhaps electric cars could even become the droopy trousers of the automotive world.

  • Holiday Book Club,

Only waterproof book I've ever seen was in someone's shower in Sydney - Aussie songs for the shower. A slim tome I wouldn't recommend.

Fish identification guides and so forth have been around for a bit. Meanwhile, a quick prod on Amazon reveals - is every thread going there this week? - Aqua Erotica, for reading in the bath.

The world does need some sort of bath-reading technology, but I don't think dedicated book formats is the way to go. Something like a plastic bag that somehow allowed pages to be turned would be more my speed.

  • Up Front: Why Does Love Do This to Me?,

Tangentially, I saw a Billy Idol video the other day and was shocked that he didn't look more like James Marsters.

James Marsters is tangential to a contemplation of slashfiction? Who do you think you're kidding?
