  • Hard News: Awesome,

Obama once again came across as far too idealistic and hugely adept at platitudes. McCain has flaws in his econoimc knowledage, but came across as decisive and realistic.

See, I thought McCain came over as someone barking talking points without really even considering the questions. If you'd been playing a drinking game and taken a tequila shot every time he said 'my friends', you'd have been dead from alcohol poisoning in about twenty minutes.

Also, idealism? That's a bad thing?

    even with a manicured wife

There are a lot of weird implications stemming from this clause, and I don't think I like a single damn one of them.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

it is simply irrelevant 25 years on in choosing a president

Irrelevant to whom? Important people, the ones with penises?

He voted against funding for contraception for teens and now supports the repeal of Roe V. Wade. His main advisor on this, Tom Coburn, is cracksmokingly, breathtakingly insane.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

be willing to fight your own party over what is right rather than blind tribal allegiance

...until the 'maverick' narrative stops being useful and you decide you really need to be president this time around, so you start cosying up to the religious right and giving George Bush lots of hugs...

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Sage old chap, what do you think about McCain's stance on reproductive rights?

  • Hard News: Awesome,

I thought Rick Warren's questions were SO much better than the idiotic 'gotcha' topics that came up during the primary debates.

Oh, agreed. It's quite worrying that the most useful lines of questioning come from satirists (Stewart, Colbert, occasionally Letterman) and Rick freaking Warren, though. Plus I do find this 'make your Christianity paramount in the election' thing so disturbing. Church. State. Separation. Work on it, USA!

(The Purpose-Driven Life is sitting on one of our bookshelves at home. My husband's family in Texas gave it to us for Xmas when we visited in 2004. A not-very-subtle hint to forgo our heathen ways, I believe. It didn't work, obviously.)

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Unfortunately, I can see the right wing smears coming.

After the US MSM decided that McCain came off best at that recent faith forum conversation thingy with The Purpose-Driven Life Guy (I mean, seriously, WTF on so many levels), I lost most of my hope. It was so clear to me that McCain came across like a complete douche, and that Obama was thoughtful and considered; but hey, it was also clear to me in 2000 that Bush was a stupid asshole, and he won. Twice.

If Obama pulls this out, I will be stunned. Thrilled, and stunned.

  • Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

But if she had been truthful, the gorgeous Liam wouldn't have fallen for her!

Liam, Schmiam! I've read ahead and I know who *he* ends up with!

Someone at work had the temerity to say that Coro St was low culture today.

Well. I don't have a problem with the concept of 'low culture' - I think I just have a problem with people being snobbish about it. I hate to bring up Dickens again, but isn't Coro St just the televisual equivalent of an extremely long, serialised epic novel? I really don't think anyone gives it enough props for the acting, which is about 90% superb. I also appreciate the way it gives the elderly and the visually unappealing real plotlines and real love lives.

It's also wonderfully campy in parts. :)

  • Stories: The Internet,

FletcherB, another costello-ler! I thought Simon and I were the lone NZers ever on that list. (There's now a transplanted Australian who lives in ChCh, but of course he doesn't count.)

My husband-to-be was very funny and celebrity gossip-obsessed (I still dine out on the first story he ever told me, a magnificent tale of Bryan Ferry wanking on someone's leg), so I initially assumed he was gay and just wanted to be my pal. I was so misinformed about life in 1997. :)

I trust the band at the wedding were Elvis impersonators?

We had no band! But we did play Get Happy!! (the best EC album. I'll fight you all on that! Because I know you all really, really care) at some point during the reception... before the karaoke.

I think that just may be one of the sweetest things I've ever heard. See, that's what I love about the Internet as social tool. It brings people together who may not have otherwise met.

Back in the day, everyone thought we were total weirdos. :) Most of the time I don't even think about it any more, because we've been together for ten years and our meeting place is less of a story than our shared life. But every now and then I have a moment where I think 'so *that* happened. I married a guy from Channelview, Texas. How fucking weird and cool is *that* shit?'

  • Up Front: They Have the Best Rides,

Do any of you watch Coro St?

I never miss it. I also have a passionate defence of it prepared for any naysayers. :)

Poor Leanne. She should have been honest about her line of work to begin with... she would have had the ovarian fortitude to carry it off.

  • Stories: The Internet,

I may not know one end of usenet from the other; I may have taken an embarrassingly long time to work out what an RSS feed was; I may get thoroughly confused by pretty much every technical aspect of the tubes. But there is one internetty thing I have on most of you, and that is this: I met my husband in 1997, in what may be *the* nerdiest place on the internet:

Costello-l. The Elvis Costello discussion listserv.

You just can't get a nerdier starting place than that for a long-term relationship. I'm sorry. You can all try, but you will not top it. It is totally ludicrous.

(Moreover, costello-l has been going for so long that it has spawned something like five marriages and, at last count, about five kiddies. It's also where I initially encountered one Mr Simon Grigg...)
