  • Hard News: Food Show 08,

Those little stovetop espresso pots? They sell a range of them at Briscoes - that's where I got mine. In *Henderson*. Made in Italy, too. We truly are democratised!

(It occurs to me that my childhood, which was constantly interrupted by my father loudly grinding coffee beans he bought from one of the few European delis on the North Shore, was probably a bit unusual in this respect...)

  • Hard News: Food Show 08,

quite how bad American food is once you get even a small distance from a major immigrant-based centre

I was going to leap to the fore and defend American food, but then realised that I was basing my love on a) Cajuns and Creoles (immigrant-based cuisine) and b) Tex-Mex and Cal-Mex (immigrant-based cuisine). However: barbeque. Barbeque is *awesome*. That's... all I got, really. Oh, and Louisiana coffee is good. It's filter, but it's good. Must be the French influence there...

(It should also be noted that even small towns in Texas and Louisiana have wonderful food. Tiny little taco stands and hole-in-the-wall seafood joints.)

  • Hard News: Yr Enemies R Stupid,

they all just show what a trivial medium TV is when people are out to score cheap and boring points - eg the war has gone badly, you didnt anticipate x and y

Actually, it's clear that the point Jon Stewart was making was far more complex than that, particularly if you watch the unedited part two of his interview with Feith. He was arguing that the war was based on a hypothetical - 'Hussein may attack!' - but that while the administration was quite happy to talk in hypotheticals in the case *for* war, they deliberately misrepresented or obfuscated the hypothetical worst-case scenarios - which have, of course, come to pass in spades.

You find this works out? I got a fab pair of glasses in Hong Kong, but I was never quite sure that they were as sorted as from an NZ optomestrist.

I've bought four pairs of glasses online and all of them are as good as any I've ever had. Of course, I'm a small-plastic-frames person, retro-librarian-styles, so I don't have any issues with nose-fit or weight or any complicated stuff like that. Plus if they don't work out, you spent $30. No biggie.

You know, Kebabette, I'm thinking the Deirdre Barlows may make a comeback! I might spend $30 on a pair and frizz out my hair and see if I can become the femme fatale of my street. Heh.

I know a bit more about Katrina than most people I meet.

We have argued this issue about 974,000 times, James, but 'I was there!' does not a coherent argument make. Nor does 'I blame the people who didn't leave' (class-ay!) or repeating the 'state and local authorities! state and local authorities!' mantra.

There is an uncut two-part Daily Show interview with weaselly Feith which lasts the best part of 20 minutes here.

    Most illuminating.
