  • Hard News: Mind Blending, in reply to Russell Brown,

Oh well. The tone can surely only go up from here ...

Sir, you can make a mantra of that if it affords you any comfort. You have no idea what I'd do -- or at least give serious consideration -- for a seemly pecuniary inducement.

If your ta-tas are hirsute enough, I’ll give you boob-braids for a tenner in the begging bucket.

But given the email I received on Friday, the slutty, slutty support would be appreciated.

Here's a down payment on the epic hugging you're going to get next week - don't need to know why you need it.

  • Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to Hilary Stace,

Carol – If you want to change people’s minds you first have to acknowledge that they have a right to their views.

That’s fine, Hilly, but you know something I keep bringing up Wakefield for one very simple reason. As Ben Goldacre has said more eloquently than I could, his “right to his view” came to a screaming halt when it was based on scientific fraud. When it was being uncritically repeated by the media to already anxious parents whose decision could have literally been a matter of life and death for their children. When we’re never going to know for sure how many children needlessly suffered or died as a direct result of Wakefield’s fraud, and the media’s utter dereliction of it’s most basic duty – to tell the truth.

One little factoid that didn’t come out is that Ring is currently pimpin’ a new book. I guess the unspeakable human misery that’s been on parade this last week is one hell of a hook.

Sorry, Hillary, this man is a parasite on human fear and misery. Seeing his fan club in action, I've no reason to moderate my utter contempt for this worm,

Does that mean I have to do at least one more post before next Thursday? Bugger – that’s my life of aesthetic dissipation down the pooper.

  • Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to Russell Brown,

I suspect I’ll be shouting at things by the end of the week. Sigh.

Why wait? From a 'Bryan' over at Brian Edwards' place:

The only people who could support John Campbell must be scientists working for NIWA.

The Ring Cult really shouldn't be on the internet without adult supervision.

  • Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to Russell Brown,

Brian Ewards goes ballistic, blazes out a blog post calling Campbell “egotistical, self-important, out of control, closed-minded, biased, unprofessional” and “a disgrace to the interviewer’s trade.”

As I said to you on Twitter, it would have been nice if Brian Edwards (who I sincerely have enormous respect for, even when he’s being an effing fool) had gotten as much rage on when the media – including Campbell Live – where giving anti-vaccination nuts “balanced” airtime to push Andrew Wakefield’s theory that there’s a link between vaccination and autism. A theory, BTW, which has now been exposed as "an elaborate fraud" by investigative journalist Brian Deer and the British Medical Journal.

BE'sMMV, but that was a real "disgrace"; one where speaking dangerous quackery actually puts the lives of God only knows how many children at risk.

You’re right that the interview wasn’t exactly John Campbell’s Frost/Nixon, but the rage seems somewhat misplaced and exaggerated IMO.

  • Hard News: What Now?, in reply to Ross Mason,

And good to see Richie McCaw being brought in as a reference for Kenny in lieu of qualifications, Oh dear…..

The delicious irony is that Ring is apparently unaware that Richard Hugh McCaw does have a tertiary qualification: A B.Ag.Sc from Lincoln – which also gives him precisely zero credibility to mash up climatology, astronomy and seismology for pseudo-scientific fun and profit. Which may explain why McCaw's interview was all about his experience not some fanciful ballocks that is profoundly exploitative of desperate and frightened people.

  • Muse: OPEN THREAD: Voices from Christchurch, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

Fingers crossed -- don't think I'm speaking out of school saying the Pedro Costa season (definitely on the more "challenging" end of the programme) was looking a bit touch-and-go for a while, and I'm personally hoping folks will get out of their comfort zones and embrace the anime. Really excited about finally seeing Spirited Away and Millennium Actress on the big screen rather than DVD.
