Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to
I clicked through to the post about the two looters who stole the generators. Unpleasant immediately.
Oh, let me guess -- murderous atavism that would make a Neanderthal blush for shame?

Hard News: The First Draft, in reply to
Stephen:
That's a fair point, and one I haven't always made as scrupulously as I should have. Nobody at 46 Albert Street, Auckland on Thursday night gets the kind of pass I'd extend to (for example) The Press staffers who were struggling to go to press when their newsroom had almost literally fallen down around them (and one of their colleagues had been killed and three others seriously injured), and were battered by the trauma of being in the middle of utter chaos.
The newspaper trade, by nature, is one of endless rolling deadlines that breaking news doesn't respect. I just can't believe that front page went to press without being signed off on by Tim Murphy or a very senior deputy. PTSD doesn;t cut it.

Since then, the New Zealand Herald has pushed the boundaries of good taste on two front pages
Um, yes… I certain got some stick on Twitter and here for describing Friday’s effort (half the front page, above the fold, occupied by a photo of five month old Baxtor Gowland) as “kiddie death porn”. But, hell… “taste” is a notoriously slippery concept, granted, but what kind of mind doesn't look at a giant photo of a dead baby and think "too much"?

I don't think I've ever been in North & South's demographic sweet spot, but like Metro it's easy to forget what a bracing gust of fresh air they were in the 80's -- it wasn't just the "long-form" stories, but the attitude and strong editorial identity and point of view that many have pissed you off no end but was hard to ignore..

Your wish is my command. Next week, I promise you something irredeemably silly.

Hard News: Again: Is everyone okay?, in reply to
That’s just totally awesome. City’s devastated, hundreds are dead, but they still hold their AGM. Yay for the triumph of the human spirit over adversity!
That's the AGM of the national umbrella organisation, which was held in Wellington -- equally inconvenient for everyone else. But I'm still awfully impressed that Ryan showed up - don't think anyone would have thought any the worse of him if he'd just sent an apology. In the great scheme of things, the CFS might seem pretty petty but a lot of people have worked very hard over a lot of years to make it one of the most successful film socs in New Zealand. I hope they'll be back sooner rather than later.

Hard News: What Now?, in reply to
Surely the question to be asked about the cathedral is whether it should remain a functioning church or not?
No - since I'm a Catholic at the other end of the country not an Anglican that question is so far beyond my pay grade I get a nose bleed just thinking about it.

On a slightly more cheerful note, Canterbury Film Society president Ryan Reynolds (really) might not have a home but was elected president of the New Zealand Federation of Film Societies at their AGM over the weekend.
Sadly, the CFS will not be kicking off their season next Monday along with the rest of us. The ceiling has fallen in at the Regent Cinema, which was to have been the venue this year, and the fate of the brochures, which are waiting to be collected from the printer, is unknown. I understand nobody is expecting the CFS to get up and running before May or June at the very earliest.
I hope you'll all join with me in wishing all the best for Ryan and his partner Coralie, who are having some chill out time in Wellington. Loves and hugs to you both, and all the rest of the CFS and Christchurch Film Festival crew.

Thanks for checking in, Ruth -- I think I can speak for all of us here at PAS in saying we're grateful for all who are safe and well, mourn for the lost, and wish you all the very best. You're not forgotten.
