  • Hard News: What we have really lost,

I own 900 square metres of land in Massey, West Auckland. Naturally my motivation for acquiring this land was so that I could declare sovereignty over it and I am looking for others of a like mind to buy any attached parcels of land.

Seriously though, the mountain peaks in what became the centre piece of the Tongariro National Park were giften to the Crown by Te Heu Heu of Ngati Tuwharetoa on the condition that they were protected.

What's the problem with doing a similar thing but the other way round?

  • Hard News: Rousing Auckland,

Can anybody help me out here.

Who was the first person or persons to suggest Auckland become a 'Super City' in terms of councils?

I realise that there have been complaints about Aucklands inability to sort out transport issues and get consensus between councils on that issue and others but where did the idea for this super city as it has manifested come from?

I've heard some dodgy behind the scenes ess aych eye tee about how it's unfolding lately and can see this stuff being hurled left right and centre for years to come if the worst case scenario comes true.

At least Banksy is behind in the polls though. That's a start.

I think with Lost you can miss 25 consecutive episodes and still tune in and work out that they have basically done SFA to resolve anything ;)

  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

There isn't a salary cap per se in the Super 14 in terms of how much each team can spend but each NZ team is owned by the NZRU, and players are paid according to what level they get up to, ie ABs, or just Super 14 team.

So for all intents and purposes there are fairly well defined limits they can be paid. There is no free market they can test themselves on by declaring themselves off contract with the Blues and looking for a big offer from the Hurricanes and Chiefs who get into a bidding war.

At the end of the day every player in the comp has to talk to the same people who tell them what they are worth and it's like it or lump it, or go play in Japan, France or whereever.

  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

    Shit, apologies for the mistake.

I just called the ANZC a "top competition".

  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

You'd be surprised how many top competitions have salary caps Steve.

Super 14, ANZC, NFL, NBA, and IPL are a few.

  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

I definately think that there should be some allowance for players developed by the club. To be fair though even though there isn't most clubs do do a heck of a lot to bring through young guys because if they don't they will miss out on all the best young talent and be stuck with cast-offs.

I'm not sure how they would do it though. Maybe something along the lines of saying that for each locally developed player the club can go $50,000 over the cap. But there would have to be strict rules as to what locally developed means.

It would certainly be a massive incentive to a) invest in local players and b) for loyalty from local players as their club would earn more and by connection they themselves would be likely to earn more.

I think one of the major sticking points though is that some teams have strong local comps they can sniff through each week while others don't like Melbourne for example who would be greatly disadvantaged by only having a new, weakish league comp in Melbourne. These club comps essentially have nothing to do with the clubs.

  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

On what laws may have been broken I'm not sure, it could be to do with misappropriated funds which was meant for one thing and used for another. Not sure though.

Regarding the players knowing I find it a bit hard to believe that the top ones didn't know.

Surely the club has to submit a list of all it's contracted players and what they are earning. The NRL then adds this up to see what it equals (and obviously that was 4.1 million or less).

The NRL then goes to each player individually and asks them what they are earning and cross checks it to make sure that's what they were told.

If it all adds up to 4.1 mill or less then some player or players are liars.

  • Field Theory: The Old Marquee Scam,

Crowd attendances had bottomed out in 2004 at under 9,000 per game.

Warriors average crowd in 2004 was 10,171. 2006 was when the arse fell out and it was 8,829 (was 16,842 in 2003 when they were going well). Interestingly last year when they were pretty awful throughout they averaged 15,486.

There was no way they could make the Storm sit the season out. In effect that would mean the club collapses.

Players have contracts, sponsors have deals (the ones they still keep), fans still have tickets, some will want their money back but some won't, stadiums need operating costs paid, oppositions sides need matchday income, TV networks have deals etc.
