if you're going to position yourself as an authority

You keep saying this about Russell. I'm quite interested in what you think the 'legitimate' path to authoritativeness about New Zealand media is. Is there a course you can take at polytech? Can you write away for the bit of paper, like those 'ordained minister' mail-orders? Most importantly, which letters do you get after your name once you're 'qualified'?

(If we get to choose our own, once I get mine, I'd like to use KOATNZB [Knower of All Things New Zealand Media]. Or perhaps NZMB [New Zealand Media Badass].)

  • Indiana Jonesing,

As far as I can tell shooting a friend in the face, and then making the friend apologise to him, is about the best thing he's done in eight years.

Every now and then, I still giggle at Jon Stewart's unabashed glee on the first Daily Show after that incident. 'He shot... an old man... IN THE FACE!'

    But isn't Bush a a complete bastard.

    Hooray, we all agree!

  • Indiana Jonesing,

49% of respondents to the poll disagree. Bizarre.

Or: 49% of these people have never taken a single American history class.

I don't know if this is the correct one, Craig, but Labelle's costumery, as a group, was uniformly Teh Awesome.

I've never seen them looking anything less than stellar.

Simon, that Lionel info is illuminating. No wonder he went to hell in a handbasket so rapidly.

the theme tune to Ready to Roll

I only recently discovered that the actual theme tune was 'Machine Gun' by The Commodores.

(Warning: intense Soul Train awesomeness starts 20 seconds in. Cheers, Lionel! You were a total badass before all that 'Dancing on the Ceiling' palaver!)

RTR. Ohhhhh, the excitement on Saturday afternoons, when you could see - gasp! - music videos! (Radio With Pictures was a little past my bedtime. Yes, I had a bedtime at that age. Quite a strict one, actually.) My American husband refers to my 'grey, stalinist' childhood in early 80s New Zealand, but I prefer to think of it as a time when we really appreciated the miniscule amount of pop culture we received...

  • Southerly: My First Stabbing,

    This story is magnificent.

(But, query: your grandfather *really* chose to read Orwell's Homage to Catalonia to six-week-old you? Because if that's true, it might be the most hilarious thing... well, ever.)

  • Indiana Jonesing,

If North Carolina Democrats are seething with a pathological hatred of women (misogyny), they've got a damn funny way of showing it.

This kind of argument, Craig, is the rhetorical equivalent of 'because there are three women executives, sexism in business doesn't exist'. Incremental improvement in numbers of women running for office is great! But it doesn't mean that political campaigns are free from the kind of ideological framing that betray bias, sexism and (occasionally) misogyny.

  • Indiana Jonesing,

He might decide to only do one term of course.

People, let's not get ahead of ourselves. He is, quite obviously, going to *lose to McCain*.

some cross-over Governor in the mid-west

I'm going with a southern dude. Or at least someone with a little twang in his voice.
