  • MMP: This Time It's Binding,

Ben Wilson: Any second referendum will be 'MMP against the favoured alternative.' From Simon Power's announcement:

"The first referendum will ask two questions: the first will ask voters if they wish to change the voting system from MMP. The second will ask what alternative voting system they would prefer, from a list of options.
    . . .

"If a majority of voters opt for a change from MMP, there will be a second referendum at the 2014 general election. This will be a contest between MMP and the alternative voting system that receives the most votes in the first referendum. It will be binding.

"If a majority of voters prefer the alternative voting system to MMP, the 2017 general election will be held under the alternative voting system.

  • Hard News: Bowie for the BDO?,

I stand corrected. Video wasn't up when I looked at Stuff earlier, and their first three comments were at 11.56am - 11.58am, usually a good indicator. I must write 100 lines.

Dave Waugh, you rock. Thought I was all on my lonesome in suburbia. Now, an unscientific survey of online responsiveness: who posted the Letterman link when.

11.34am: Of all the people to post first, Trevor Mallard on Red Alert

11.50am approx: Stuff (their timestamp appears to be the story before the video went up)

12:13pm: honourable mention to RB, a minute ahead of

    12.14pm: NZ Herald

and a long lonely last, nearly two hours off the pace:

1:14pm all round National cheerleader David Farrar

As at 2.20pm, absolutely zilch at the places you thought would have been first: the National site, his own John Key site, and the official Beehive site.

  • OnPoint: Manufacturing Dissent,

Jackie, good on you for nagging, and Keith good on you for doing the work.

But who is going to do anything on this? It's great getting all these comments in a liberal-luvvie-fest, but are you going to hope a MSM journo picks it up and does some hard work? Cosgrove did a release last month on double-bunking. Can you go further with this?

In short, who is going to bell the cat?

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

I always make sure I have enough booze at home to last at least 2 days.

But what will happen in a civil defence emergency? Y'know, earthquake, volcano, cyclone, running out of alcohol and the like?

Hey, serious thought, Iain Lees-Galloway over at Red Alert has a thread going on the second of several proposals from the Law Commission. This one on a minimum price for booze by volume of alcohol content. Do read the several caveats.

Some people may want to mosey on over.

    There is a 12 noon, and a 12 midnight.

Graeme, you are a pedantic curmudgeon. I'm proud there is another like me who insists on writing 12 noon (or midday)

    "supersized". Dunedin City

Hardly comparable. Dunedin has ~ 122K people while Waitakere, smallest of the four existing Ak cities has over 200K people and the new superAuckland will be 10 times the size of Dunedin,

But 'swallowing local boroughs' for 100 years? What an appetite.
