  • Hard News: From soundbite to policy,

On Herceptin, I can commend people look at the graph on page 4 of this document. The green FinHer line is the 9week consecutive course of Herceptin. Because of its relatively smaller sample, there is a lower degree of precision with the estimate, but it's worth noting that the trial has both a strong estimate of efficacy, and one of the longer follow up times of the trials available.

  • Hard News: Debacles and Disgraces,

In fact, you should probably get another one now and mirror them

The first goal is to make sure that I put the keyboard in a drawer and run the computer by remote/the buttons on the front. Backing up certainly has a lot to be said for it. Considering buying an NAS device and will probably end up with a couple of TB storage there. Time is an issue. It seems it would be nice to scan in the cover-art as well. Will probably be able to get a 10 or 100 TB drive by the time I actually do this. Was briefly considering how many floppies worth of information the one drive would hold.

  • Hard News: Debacles and Disgraces,

I'd recommend FLAC. It's lossless, which means the sound will be stored exactly as in the original data.

I'm not planning on getting rid of the original sources. Just my CDs are getting a bit scratched, and it is often very hard to find the one I want, or the music that I'm in the mood for. Of course I only have a couple of hundred CDs, so I could FLAC them, and still have room in the hdd for my tv recordings (to be fair, I somewhat expect to buy another big hdd for the unit, and am also thinking of moving to a solid state system disk at some point). Torturously, most of the parts are sitting in the corner of my office, but the case & keyboard are not likely to be here until tomorrow or Friday.

  • Hard News: Debacles and Disgraces,

So thinking about digitizing. I've just taken possession of a terabyte hard drive, and am in the process of replacing my DVD player and video. I'd welcome any suggestion for the best (low size, excellent quality) sound format to start my backing up process :)

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

James Green: in a bush outside your house, late at night... but the man knows what he's doing with a camera!

And people are worried about streetview!

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

I guess part of the point is that the flash doesn't harm the shot of something that it fails to illuminate, but it might illuminate close things a whole lot better...so why not?

If it does illuminate something, it also changes the colour temperature, which is one of the reasons why I almost never use flash. You can always warmify it later, but meh, why not do it right first time.

I also turn all of the sounds off on my cameras. Apart from the noises being stupid, it also makes it much more possible to take discrete photographs.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

In some old buildings etc in Europe they'll tell you you can't take photos because of copyright law.

And in other places, because of the potential damage done by the flash.
One of my pet peeves is the number of people who seem incapable of turning off the flash on their camera. I almost never use the flash on my point and shoot. Even at night, I'd much prefer the grainier warm look than red-eyed people looking pasty as flock because of the flash.
    FLASH IS NOT YOUR FRIEND.

And don't even get me started on flashes at big events. I guess it can sometimes look really cool looking back at the crowd and seeing all the flash flickering, but given the effective range of a flash is under 10m, epic fail.

If you need a privacy concern, I'd say a much bigger negative is that by producing the mapping, google gain yet another window onto users lives. How many people have their house set as their default location (or at least look at it most often). It gives google a whole geographical in-road to add to all the rest of the information they might have about you.

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

Thanks for re-making my point Craig. Lieberman also gets to tick at least two boxes. Obama still gets at least two, and Key still gets nil.

Also, it's a bit of a stretch, by most definitions of ethnicity to call Key "ethnically Jewish". Statistics New Zealand have a long and a short definition of ethnicity, but this to paraphrase "degree of cultural affiliation not just ancestry".

Yes. Perhaps the 'first black president' is getting old, but it is at the very least a bit more relevant and a bit more accurate.

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

Oh wait, I do have an echo on Danielle.

If you were studying the effect of ethnicity in interaction, you might consider
    1. Person A's apparent ethnicity (what other people see)
    2. Person A's ethnic identity (self-identity, probably manifested in behaviour)
    3. Relevance of ethnicity to the context.

Let's fit this model to Obama & Key
    Ob JK
    1. Y N
    2. ? ?
    3. Y N (or at least less so)

Does false equivalence need to spelled out more clearly?
