  • Hard News: Just Friday,

Surely morphine has even more severe withdrawal symptoms?

After extended use yes. If you're just on it for a couple of days then not so much.

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

A couple of days on morphine and no coffee also seems to work. (Whether the pain of the surgery might overwhelm the withdrawal pain not controlled for)

  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

If I could spell how how John Key says New Zealand, then I'd nominate that. It's more subtle than "mainstream New Zealander" ala Brash, but I think it serves largely the same meaning.

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

    the good shit

It's a much over-looked point in the debate, but pseudoephidrine is a much better decongestant than phenylephrine. If you're pharmacist won't give you pseudo, there are a surprising number of other options, including most aphetamines and cocaine. Ritalin, LSD and psilocybin may also have some effect. Amusingly, caffeine is one of the few stimulants not likely to be useful...

  • Hard News: The smart thing to do,

@James, NZ Rail (whatever they're called now) have stopped the disused line to be set up as a safe cycle path from Christchurch to Prebbleton

This is very cool. They're also talking about turning part of the old rail line in toward Lawrence into one. The old Catlins line would also be quite cool.

I once really spent an idealic day on such a trail in Burgundy, stumbling across this amazing chateau (an actually castle-ish one, as opposed to just a big house).

  • Hard News: The smart thing to do,

Great news on the same day that we learn there will be no bikes and walks across the bridge.

Well if it's any consolation, bikers & walkers don't count in Dunedin either. We might get a replacement for the 'brook, but the council can't find a couple of hundred thou to build a track through 2 disused railway tunnels. Or finish the cycleway round the harbour (probably a bit more expensive).

  • OnPoint: There is no depression in New…,

Hmmm. I know this is SUPER OFF TOPIC, but does anyone recall criticism of the reserve bank selling NZD in June last year? Because, uh, following their own policy, I don't think they'll have started buying yet, but they're sitting on a pretty monstrous paper profit by now.

Speaking of technology, I wonder why papers are printed at all anymore.

I assume that despite their enormous upfront cost, the big presses have enormously low running costs (both in terms of paper and ink). I'm not sure that you can easily downscale that to a kiosk. It's one thing to pay a buck twenty for a paper, but you might be looking at that much for a section. Also, even a pretty beasty sort of a printer is going to keep you waiting for possibly longer than you'd want, especially on the way to work.

  • Field Theory: On Averages,

Uh, I was fine until I installed Te Taura Whiri's macroniser. I guess I should just try to remember to preview. And yes, I do actually use macrons more frequently than I post links on public address...

I was initially reasonably pro-Stadium, but the more the details are filled in, the dafter it seems.

    I can has tohutō!
