  • Public Address Word of the Year 2008,

Rather than wasting time arguing on the internet, Craig has inadvertently reminded me of a very realistic nomination for Word of the Year.

    a heartbeat away from X

Hoho. I just re-read the comments to that. One of the people debating with you writes for, er, Investigate.

  • Hard News: They can see your house from here,

It seems pretty clear that gravel scared them off. They went to some pretty bloody daft places, but the entire valley that my mum grew up in is off the reservation.

They drove into Rocklands Station (which is a good distance onto the Old Dunstan Road), but gave up at the end of the seal.

I guess if Meridian do put in their bloody wind turbines, StreetView might make it a bit further in.

There is also, ultimately, an issue about appearance, as well as ethnicity (and this applies not just to ethnicity, but gender, disability, age etc.). The way people treat you when they first meet you is largely based on how you look. And I very much doubt that those who are afraid of a black president are very much reassured by the ethnicity of his mother.

Awright, how'd you get a link that takes us straight there? I have tired of trying.

The linky thing is at the top right. Beware, however, if you have your home address set as your default location, as it will end up in your link!!

They weren't that pussy. They made it up Baldwin St, and all the adjacent, almost as steep streets (although amusingly, they have all the paper roads mapped out, despite them being un-navigable, except in all-terrain jandals).

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

is Noelle McCarthy's passing off sections of the work of others as her own inherently different from that for which Alexis Stuart lost her job?

I can't abide the NatRad afternoon show, so I'm not sure to what extent they're expected to be original, but my general impression is that in radio, reading other people's stuff without attribution is the norm. The most amusing thing about this is that if you read widely on the internet, it usually takes at least a fortnight for it to permeate radio consciousness. Whether it be the latest "Rock News" or "Celebrity Gossip", it's usually pretty stale.

I think the other notable thing about the Stuart incident was her unstated relationship with Maxim/Bruce Logan. As far as I'm aware Ms McCarthy isn't alliedly to a lobby group whose viewpoint she is claiming as her own.

It has to be "like"--the teenagers' comma, fullstop and general all-round fill-in word.

Like has been expanding its scope for rather longer than that!
The Scottish have been using it since the 1700s at the end of sentences, like. Linguists suggest that it has acquired a new grammatical function with every generation.

There is probably an extent to which like serves a social rather than semantic function, but it does mostly still convey meaning.

  • Hard News: Just Friday,

The toxic dose for paracetamol is mostly not one tablet over, but it depends on your body weight and the state of your liver (and probably some other parameters). Taking extra for a hangover not a good plan as your liver is already worked up. It's also worse if you've been taking too much over 8+ hours than a single high dose.

The crappiest thing about it is that if you do take a fatal dose and don't catch it in time, you have a 2-3 day delay before death...

Giovanni, there's no particular problem to take paracetamol, ibuprofen, and codeine at the same time. Codeine is metabolized to morphine anyway(!)
