  • Hard News: The Spiral of Events,

Trotter is a bit of a dick, but am I the only one who has thought, as the issue bubbled to the surface every couple of weeks over recent months, "wow, the media has decided it's time to finish Winston Peters."

I can't say it really bothers me one way or the other, but the unified media front against Peters has struck me as "assassination by word processor" or whatever (trying to think of a non-inflammatory metaphor).

Of course, he hasn't helped his cause.

  • Hard News: The Spiral of Events,

And there are worse things in this world than a mediocre MP.

Indeed, but that doesn't stop me being very pleased indeed about the imminent departure of Brian Connell from the House. What with Winston dominating the news so completely, the loss of Brian as an MP has hardly been noticed.

Back on topic, what came to mind when listening to that Peters interview on RNZ was: "He sounds like a man who knows he's fucked."

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

Che - the Herald's political commentators use the beltway metaphor all the time too.

Maybe 'The West Wing' helped to internationalize the term?

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

Did Winny state (as I believe) in his pre-election advertisement of 1996 (I think) that a vote for him would ensure the departure of the National Government of the day. He then of course went on to strike his famous deal with Jim Bolger. Anyone know if it is possible to view old party political broadcasts somewhere on the net?

In Te Atatu, NZ First candidate (and former Labour MP) Jack Elder campaigned on the slogan "Only Jack can beat National." He was duly elected on the NZ First List, and became a Minister in the National-led government of 96-99 (aka the ship of the damned).

really hate the term 'the beltway'.

Fair enough, but it ain't my term. HC used it with reference to media hysteria over the EFB, and it is now in routine use in political 'reporting' in NZ. For example, the Dominion Post's collection of political blogs is called "Inside the Beltway".

Does appearing under this banner diminish the credibility (such as it is) of Tracy Watkins, Vernon Small, Martin Kay, and Tim Donoghue?

'The Thorndon Bubble' is a pretty obscure term I would have thought (again, no offence to the blog of the same name).

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

    giovanni/leggie/gareth:

i don't think there was anywhere the PM could go with this.

Owen: I had a conversation with Winnie
    Helen: Is this true, Winnie?
Winnie: No it's not, I swear
    Helen: Are you sure?
    Winnie: Yes

In the lack of any corroborating evidence, this he said/he said crap can't go anywhere.

Guys like Owen and Winnie presumably each have several hundred meetings, and upwards of 1000 phonecalls, a month ... so their ability to recollect accurately is doubtful anyway.

Plus, I can't help but think this is a beltway issue.

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

    From the Herald:

While she said she wanted to see the matter "dealt with", Helen Clark said she felt she had a duty to be fair.

"I have not known Mr Peters to lie to me, and I have to take people as I find them," she said.

"He is utterly convinced that he never made that call."

What's wrong with her stance here?

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

she sat on those contradictory statements for so long as proof that she was hoping the news wouldn't break until after the election. This is a disaster.

Are you Duncan Garner in disguise? ;-)

Both Peters and Glenn "swear" they are telling the truth ... what's Helen supposed to do about it in the complete absence of any evidence one way or the other?

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

    Interesting times.

I wonder if Helen will knock back a bottle of whisky this evening and call a snap election.

And will Cullen let her tyres down?

You could probably persuade McKinnon and Wood to reprise their original roles? Winston Peters will make an excellent stand in for Marilyn Waring of course. But you don't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting Helen to play Muldoon

According to Gufstafson's biography, Muldoon had had a "half dozen" whiskies and brandies at an event earlier in the evening, followed by a few drinks at Government House, and was a "drunken meglomaniac" by 8pm, before announcing the snap election at 11.15pm.

    All class.

  • Island Life: He lied to us all,

Getty Images? Who'd expect a fly-by-night outfit like that to now exactly when and where one of its photos was taken?

Well, since the accompanying blurb describes him as the New Zealand immigration minister, I wouldn't necessarily put too much faith in it.

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Exactly, and it's a mindset in America, which we thankfully don't really share in NZ...the service in the military card doesn't have the same resonance.

Thankfully, otherwise it would be the likes of Ron Mark and that ACT woman (who has recently awoken from a two-and-a-half-year slumber, I notice) running the place.
