  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

As an aside... Real Groove magazine is being knocked on the head and merged with its freebie sister publication, the Groove Guide booklet.

No word if it'll remain a freebie, however, or if it'll be re-named.

Anyone with their ear to the ground in Auckland music / media circles have any more info on the whys and wherefores of this ?

  • Voting Local 2010,

Suzanne Prentice didn't do herself any favours by constantly interrupting Tim Shadbolt during their debate on Morning Report this morning.

I hope Tim bolts in. :)

  • Hard News: Hobbit Wars,

Good fisk of the Herald's hopeless editorial

What does "fisk" mean, please ? Is it some trendy, new term in vogue in Auckland that has yet to get past the Bombays ?

If someone could explain, it'd be appreciated.

  • Hard News: Postmodern Banks Anxiety,

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that a few people have taken the fake John Banks Twitter account for the real thing.

It's pretty appalling too that far too many media outlets have been sucked in and believe that Jim Anderton actually said "Only an earthquake could stop me from winning".

The Listener ran it in Jane Clifton's page last week, others ran it as well.

However, as RNZ's Media Watch pointed out yesterday, Anderton was actually discussing his leaving the Labour Party in the late '80s and the quote was selctively edited to make it seem as if he was talking about the Chch earthquake.

If I was him, I'd be seeking apologies from those who printed and broadcast it.

There's a very good old-fashioned tea shop on the main drag going through Temuka and I can indeed vouch for the high quality custard squares there, among other goodies available.

  • Cracker: Strike Nine (and counting),

A couple of, ahem, "humourous" comments on Garrett I've seen on Arsebook:

"If I bore the mark of an ACT MP, I'd want a new identity as well"

    and

"David Garrett committed identity fraud after reading Day Of The Jackal. Just be thankful he didn't read American Psycho."

  • Cracker: Strike Nine (and counting),

    It was that simple.

Actually Grant we don't know that at all - because Key refused to tell the public why one of his Ministers resigned.

True, but it was generally implied (in the media, etc) that Worth's comments were of an inappropriate sexual nature and there's been little dispute about that being the case.

  • Hard News: Kids: Still alright,

Sweetman can be pretty baffling. I often agree with him on certain bands, but am then puzzled at his like at others.

I mean, this is a man who likes crap like Phil Collins, Sting, Tracy Chapman and once, in North & South described the dreadful Tears For Fears as "one of the best bands of the 1980s". Dear oh dear.

Street Chant are more my cup of tea, but I have no problems with The Naked And The Famous. They're not hugely innovative, but they are a pretty bloody good pop band, all the same.

Also, I don't have any problems with them winning awards or being commercially successful. I think they're a bit like, say, the Screaming Meemees or the (Dance) Exponents, in that their commercially acceptable sound is actually their "natural" sound. That's just how they are.

I'm much more tolerant of bands that are naturally like that as opposed to clearly contrived acts like the Feelers or Midnight Youth.
