  • On Morals,

Intrigued by the huge gap between doctor-assisted suicide and just suicide (+18% vs - 48%)

    I'm not surprised at all....

a doctor is only going to assist someone with a terminal illness with no possibility of improvement in their very real suffering... someone already so ill they cant get the job done by themselves.

Helping such a person could go either way depending on your moral compass.

the vast majority of people who succeed or attempt suicide are either in a temporary funk due to some failed love relationship, or in need of medical help for a mental health issue, and any doctor will refuse to assist, and possibly even get the actual help required. Typically their need to "end it all" will pass, and they will be grateful to be alive afterward.

Most people would see helping that person kill themselves as stupid at the very least, ranging all the way to positively evil.

  • Cracker: Mix Your Members,

"Probably the Yandall Sisters. They were on just about everything, back then."

That was my guess too....for much the same reason... I just didnt pipe up because I knew I mis-remembered the name.... "Randell Sisters" was sticking in my mind, but I knew it was wrong...

  • Hard News: Detritus,

"Are they like those creepy flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz?"

I can confidently state that the type of flying monkey that may or may not be flying out of Russell's butt has not yet been categorized... in fact, it would seem premature to try and determine what type of flying monkey it is, before its existence has been confirmed.

  • Cracker: History Repeating,

"and large chunks of a newsreader just talking to the camera without any pics at all"...

You say that like it's a bad thing? The counter-point is that these days**... it doesnt matter how earth-shattering the event, if there's no pictures then it's not news.

** admittedly, "no pictures" is now extremely rare due to the proliferation of cheap video gear and even camera equipped mobile phones... this "no pictures so it didnt happen" was more a '90s problem than current.

  • Cracker: History Repeating,

Ha ha... the water bottles to stop dogs doing their stuff...

I remember noticing the occasional water-bottled front yard as I walked home from the bus-stop after tech, and then all of a sudden, the day after that clip was shown, the sudden and wide-spread proliferation.

I couldnt imagine so many people could be so gullible... and then I got to our own house and discovered that my parents had followed everyone else.... I was mortified.

  • Hard News: Dead Elephant Frenzy,

The free entry to the zoo on Sunday was sponsored by ASB.... so they've certainly maintained something of a relationship... whether it's been continuos or sporadic, I dont know, but my son got a plastic elephant moneybox with Kashin's name on it from the ASB last year...

  • Up Front: Does My Mortgage Look Like a…,

Does that article sound suspiciously like the police officers were the ones doing the beating? Or am I just a cynical person?

I guess thats one reading of it... my (only marginally) less cynical reading of it is that the police sat in their car watching the beating (possibly by the bouncer?) and were immediately on scene as soon as the kicking was over?

I saw a new ad on the telly last week.

I hear a catchy infectious tune, I see scantily (but extremely colourfully) clad women on roller skates.

"Hmmm.... they're going a bit over-the top on the women in underwear thing." I think to myself. "So what are they selling?"

    "Oh- they're selling womens underwear"

    I guess that's OK then?
