  • Field Theory: How you wear it,

How will you know unless you ask?

I decided , for the purpose of a scientific experiment, to make such an enquiry.

    I have been informed:
    1) proceeding with such a plan could lead to divorce.
    2) Such is my skill, you needn't be too disappointed!

  • Field Theory: How you wear it,

As a lady, I am firmly of the opinion that moustaches are only permitable if they exist only to increase the sensation delivered to my lady parts.

In the past I would have gladly sought such permission, but I think my wife may object now?

The year I participated, my co-workers took to calling me Ned Flanders. It was reasonably apt.

  • Hard News: Standing up and calling bullshit,

Going back to the "how can it be seen as a National/English promotion"....

Its pretty simple really.... while all of us here at PAS are so incredibly intelligent, and never confuse correlation with causation.... advertising is frequently aimed a little lower...

If the statements about the improved economy and quicker than expected recovery were made by Brian Easton, Gareth Morgan, Bernard Hickey or any other not obviously party affiliated analyst, they are simply taken as a statement of a current situation.

When they are made by the person who is supposed to be in charge of affecting those changes, they are taken as a promotion of the ability to make positive change.

    Compare and contrast....

Auto journalists, in article says "Toyota sold more cars than anyone else in the past year". Likely to be interpreted as a statement of fact.

Toyota Exec, in paid placement says "Toyota sold more cars than anyone else in the past year" is likely to be perceived as an advertisement, no?

But thats all there is to it... a perception that its promotional.
I dont beleive at all that it was a put up job or that political influence was exerted or any of that crap. Poorly thought out creative effort is far more plausible.

  • Hard News: Safer Communities Together,

Can't look at the clip right now, but: if it's an indoors one, the Michael Fowler Centre and Chch town hall are identical,

Your observation may be accurate, but MFC wasnt completed until the early '80's and the clip is from the '70's so its moot...

  • Speaker: How to Look Good as a Nazi,

Yes. but thinking about it, it's hard to see what else the allies could have done? Try large percentages of the population for war crimes? Put them all in jail?

Wasn't this one of the main criticisms of the US's handling of post invasion Iraq? They got rid of too many Baathist party civil servants, army, etc, and thats why the country fell apart after the initial fighting was over... There was no-one to run the place.

  • Up Front: Get Your Hand Off It,

Actually it's better than carbon neutral - if it ends up in a landfill

As it happens, when the subject under discussion is "book burning" the landfill quotient is usually close to zero...

But this does raise one of my personal bug-bears with "standard" carbon accounting...

When it comes to counting where carbon is captured, or released, it seems we assume it all goes into the atmosphere as soon as a tree is felled... Which, if you burn it, or let it decompose, is reasonable enough of an assumption.... but if it becomes the framing timber of a house, or a lounge suite.... not so much?

If we grow trees, and use their wood to make durable goods, surely thats taking carbon out of the atmosphere?

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

The process of scanning an image certainly is making a new original. It's not the same as the original, though it will look similar.

Here's my completely uninformed take on it...

Whether a scan of a photograph does or does not constitute a "copy" or a "new work" could be borderline...

But surely as soon as I photoshop some ghostly-grey writing over the corner, its definitely a new work?

btw. the writing might say "copyrite me, this year"

  • Hard News: Save the King's Arms,

Having the place packed is the optimal profit situation for them, so it's not in their interests in either the short or the long term to just cut back on the number of paying customers.

Considering how many of the commenters mentioned difficulty getting to the bar, that's not necessarily the case...

90% head-count and +50% drink sales might be a better better proposition?

As for Chinese placenames dont even ask.

Ah, you mean like how Peking is now Beijing? Doesnt that seem like an international attempt to use something (approximately) closer to the local pronunciation?
